Historical Changes of the Constructions of Gender Stereotypes in lifestyle Magazines

Abstract:

ABSTRACT This thesis focuses on constuction of gender stereotypes in lifestyle womens magazines, specifically in weekly paper Slovenka: List paní a dívek from the era of First Czechoslovakian republic and contemporary weekly paper Slovenka. The research is concentrated on the volume 5 of the magazine Slovenka: List paní a dívek corresponding to the year 1935 and the volume 57 of the magazine Slovenka corresponding to the year 2004. By means of the content analysis research method, the goal of the thesis is to identify historical changes which have evolved during seven decades in construction of feminity and masculinity in womens magazines. We determined the common characteristics and the main differencies in formal and content editorial approaches in both magazines. The results indicates that contemporary magazine Slovenka presents a woman in more emancipated way as a magazine Slovenka: List paní a dívek. Nevertheless, Slovenka also contributes to the reproduction of traditional stereotypical image of feminity. Paradoxically, historical paper Slovenka: List paní a dívek portrays a man in more various way that contemporary paper Slovenka. Contemporary magazine tends to be one-sided and stereotypical in representations of masculinity.

Abstract:

ANOTÁCIA Táto práca sa zaoberá problematikou konštrukcie genderových stereotypov v ženských lifestylových magazínoch, konkrétne v prvorepublikovom týždenníku Slovenka: List paní a dívek a súčasnom týždenníku Slovenka. Výskum sa zameral na 5. ročník časopisu Slovenka: List paní a dívek vychádzajúci v roku 1935 a 57. ročník časopisu Slovenka vychádzajúci v roku 2004. Prostredníctvom metódy obsahovej analýzy sa snaží identifikovať historické premeny, ktoré v priebehu siedmich desaťročí nastali u konštruovania obrazu feminity a maskulinity v ženských magazínoch. Komparáciou sme určili spoločné rysy a základné odlišnosti formálnych a obsahových editoriálnych postupov oboch magazínov. Výsledky naznačili, že súčasný časopis Slovenka prezentuje ženu emancipovanejším spôsobom ako prvorepublikový časopis Slovenka: List paní a dívek, i napriek tomu sa ale do istej miery podieľa na reprodukcii tradičného stereotypného obrazu feminity. Taktiež sa ukázalo, že prvorepublikový časopis prezentuje paradoxne muža rozmanitejším spôsobom v porovnaní so súčasným časopisom, ktorý inklinuje ku značnej jednostrannosti a stereotypizácii.
