Film Adaptations of the Chosen Literary Works by Vladislav Vancura

Abstract:

Jednou z nejzajímavějších uměleckých osobností 20. století je bezesporu Vladislav Vančura. Jeho prózy vydobyly tomuto autorovi nezpochybnitelné místo v literárním kánonu a stejně tak se stal veličinou v oblasti kinematografie. V jakékoliv umělecké oblasti, kterou pronikl, formuloval své postuláty imaginativního díla plného svobodné tvořivosti. Jednou z možných verifikací kanonického díla je filmová adaptace. Čtyři Vančurovy prózy jsou zde nazírány prizmatem teoretika filmové adaptace Dudley Andrewa. Andrew užívá pro své tři kategorie pojmu: výpůjčka, transformace (s věrností liteře, nebo duchu) a křížení. Respekt k jednotlivým prvkům předlohy (tj. pásmo postav, jejich profily a vztahy, dále sociálně kulturní kontext a rovněž narativní postup) zařazuje Rozmarné léto, Luk královny Dorotky a Konec starých časů do řádu transformace s věrností liteře. V případě filmové Markety Lazarově se jedná vzhledem k výrazně volnějšímu nakládání s jednotlivými prvky o transformaci s věrností duchu. Tato adaptace přesto představuje dílo v souladu s klimatem předlohy, jeho rytmem a stylem, a naopak se svým odvážným odkloněním od prototextu naopak stala nejvýraznějším blížencem této předlohy, a to v originalitě, svobodě, naléhavosti otázek. Ve všech případech filmových adaptací se jedná o aktivní adaptační přístup k látce, nikoliv pasivní převedení obsahu do jiného kódu. Vysoká míra umělecké sebereflexe Vladislava Vančury, která se mimo jiné projevila volbou různé strategie v jednotlivých dílech, umožnila vzniknout velmi rozmanité filmové verze, které jen potvrzují, že náročná předloha může v první řadě rozvinout umělecky nosný dialog.

Abstract:

Vladislav Vancura is undoubtedly one of the most interesting artistic personalities of the 20th century. By his prosaic work, Vladislav Vancura achieved a steady position in the literary canon and in the same way, he became authority in the field of cinematography. In all the artistic fields he entered, he formulated his postulates of the imaginative work full of creativity freedom. A film adaptation is one of the possible verifications of a canonical piece of art. Four prosaic pieces by Vancura are viewed with the prism of Dudley Andrew, a film adaptation theoretician. Andrew uses the following terms for his three categories: borrowing, transformation (with the fidelity to the text or spirit) and crossing. My respect towards the particular elements of the original (i.e. the circle of characters, their profiles and relations, further, the social and cultural context as well as the narrating procedure) ranks Summer of Caprice, Bow of Little Queen Dorothy and End of the Old Times into the category of the transformation with the fidelity to the text. In the case of Marketa Lazarova, it is the transformation with the fidelity to the spirit for an outstanding free way of handling with the particular elements. Despite to this fact, this adaptation presents the work in accordance with the original climate of the piece of literature, with its rhythm and style and, on the contrary, it approaches to the original most by virtue of its daring divert from the prototext. In all cases of film adaptations, one can see an active adaptation attitude towards the subject matter; not a passive adaptation of the content into a different code. Vladislav Vancura‘s high level of artistic self-reflection, which was proved by selection of different strategies in his works, made various film versions possible to exist. These film adaptations confirm that a difficult original can primarily develop an artistically competent dialogue.
