Reconciliation of work and family life: the men perspective

Abstract:

Diplomová práce si klade za cíl přiblížit problematiku harmonizace práce a rodiny z perspektivy pracujících otců. Hlavním záměrem práce je odpovědět na otázku, jaké faktory ovlivňují rozhodování a jednání mužů v oblasti harmonizace práce a rodiny. K naplnění výzkumného záměru přitom byla využita kvalitativní výzkumná strategie s využitím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Teoretická část práce přibližuje nejen vývoj otcovské role, ale také základní pojmy jako je harmonizace práce a rodiny, konflikt práce a rodiny a teorie vysvětlující volbu strategie s akcentováním genderové perspektivy. Závěr teoretické části nakonec objasňuje zkušenost otců s kombinováním práce a rodiny v rovině samotných zaměstnavatelů. Empirická část následně reflektuje zapojení otců do oblasti placené a neplacené práce, mapuje potřeby otců a jejich strategie, kterými řeší případnou nerovnováhu v rovině práce a rodiny. Stěžejní část je věnována rovině zaměstnavatelů perspektivou mužů, tedy možnostem, které otcům v oblasti harmonizace zaměstnavatelé nabízí. Hlavní pozornost je zaměřena především na vliv organizační kultury na rozhodování a jednání otců při kombinování práce a rodiny. Závěrečná část shrnuje důležité aspekty problematiky harmonizace z perspektivy mužů a přináší také doporučení akcentující tuto perspektivu.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to introduce the issue of work-life reconciliation from the perspective of employed fathers. Main intention is to answer the question “What factors influence the decision making and actions of men in the issue of work and life balance”. The research was conducted by using a qualitative method: a semi-structured interviews with 11 communication partners. The theoretical part includes the basic concepts such as work-life balance and work-family conflict. The theory also explains both the shift of father´s role and the individual strategies in combining personal life and career, with emphasis on the gender perspective. The theoretical part also clarifies the fathers experience with combining work and life at the employer level. Empirical part than reflects the involvement of fathers in paid and unpaid work, mapping both the needs and strategies of fathers with combining work and life. The main part represent the influence of organizational culture on the father´s experiences in balancing work and life. The final part summarizes crucial aspects of the work-life reconciliation from the perspective of men and also provides recommendations emphasizing this perspective.
