Gender and "Vesmír" (the Universe): androcentrism in a scientific magazine

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá genderovými aspekty ve vědě. Na příkladu přírodovědeckého časopisu Vesmír sleduje, jak je vytváření vědecké znalosti zasazeno do kontextu genderové společenské struktury. Kvalitativní analýza textů z časopisu Vesmír je založena na sociologických teoriích pojímajících vědu jako sociální a kulturní instituci moderní společnosti a jako genderovanou instituci a vychází z poznatků feministické kritiky a teorie vědy. Cílem práce je zkoumat, jakým způsobem kategorie gender kóduje texty v časopise Vesmír a zjištění interpretovat v kontextu diskurzu o androcentrismu vědy. Genderově senzitivní přístup odhaluje ve zkoumaných textech, zabývajících se problematikou genderové nerovnosti, androcentrické rysy, jež jsou spojeny s genderovou polarizací a biologickým esencialismem. Androcentrismus se projevuje ve snaze o prokázání existence důležitých rozdílů mezi muži a ženami, které jsou základem pro konstrukci a legitimizaci hierarchií a dělení podle genderu, i v přítomnosti negativních reprezentací femininity a genderových stereotypů. Práce zviditelňuje stopy po genderově kódovaných normativních hodnotách skrytých za deklarovanou neutralitou a objektivitou vědy.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with gender aspects of science. It analyzes how the generation of scientific knowledge is set into the context of gender social structure on the example of Vesmír magazine. Qualitative analysis of texts from Vesmír magazine is built on theories conceptualizing science as the social and cultural institution of modern society and as the gendered institution. Is is also based on research represented by feminist critic and theory of science. The thesis aims to explore how scientific texts are coded by gender and to interpret these findings in the context of a discourse of the androcentric science. In these analysed texts that deal with gender inequality topic, gender perspective reveals androcentric features connected with gender polarization and biological essentialism. Androcentrism appears in connection with an effort aiming to prove the existence of fundamental differences between men and women, which are the basis for a construction and a legitimization of hierarchies and division based on gender. It appears also in presence of negative representations of femininity and gender stereotypes. This thesis reveals the traces of gender coded normative values hidden behind a supposed neutrality and objectivity of science.
