Depressive symptoms of the seniors in the house for the elderly

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce bylo zmapovat výskyt symptomů deprese u seniorů ve vybraných domovech pro seniory a posoudit vliv některých demografických a sociálních údajů na výskyt depresivních symptomů u těchto seniorů. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 112 seniorů ze tří vybraných domovů pro seniory splňujících kritéria pro zařazení do souboru. Data byla sbírána formou dotazníkového šetření (srpen - říjen 2019) za použití standardizovaných dotazníků Škály deprese pro geriatrické pacienty (GDS) podle Sheikh a Yesavage a Dotazníku postojů ke stárnutí a stáří WHO (AAQ). Výsledky: Mezi hodnocenými domovy pro seniory nebyly potvrzeny rozdíly ve výskytu depresivních symptomů u seniorů. Při zkoumání vztahu mezi výskytem depresivních projevů a vybranými sociodemografickými faktory bylo prokázáno, že existuje závislost mezi výskytem depresivní symptomatologie a postojem ke stáří a u spokojenosti seniorů se společenskými aktivitami. U zbývajících sociodemografických faktorů nebyl zjištěn vliv na výskyt depresivních projevů. Nejvyšší míra depresivních symptomů byla zaznamenána u žen, u seniorů ve věkovém rozmezí 85 let a více a u ovdovělých osob. Závěr: Rozpoznání výskytu deprese, zvláště u rizikových jedinců, a správná léčba depresivních poruch u starších osob spolu s podporou smysluplnosti jejich života a sociálních kontaktů výrazně přispívá ke zlepšení kvality jejich života.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this thesis was to map the occurrence of depression symptoms in seniors in the selected houses for the elderly and to evaluate the influence of some demographic and social data for the occurrence of depressive symptoms in these seniors. Methodology: The research sample consisted of 112 seniors from three selected houses for the elderly fulfilling the criteria for inclusion in the sample. The data were collected through a questionnaire survey (August - October 2019) using standardized GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale; Sheikh, Yesavage) questionnaires and AAQ (Attitudes to Ageing Questionnaire). Results: There were no confirmed differences in the incidence of depressive symptoms in the elderly among the evaluated houses for the elderly. When investigating the relationship between the occurrence of depressive behaviour and selected social-demographic factors, it was shown that there is a statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of depressive symptomatology and attitude to old age, as well as seniors' satisfaction with social activities. For the remaining socio-demographic factors there was no statistically significant effect on the occurrence of depressive manifestations. The highest rates of depression were observed among women, seniors aged 85 years and over and in widows. Conclusion: Recognizing the occurrence of depression, especially in at-risk individuals, and properly treating depressive disorders in the elderly, together with promoting the meaningfulness of their lives and social contacts, contribute significantly to improvement of their quality of life.
