Geopolitical rivalry of India and China in the Indian Ocean region

Abstract:

Tématem diplomové práce je geopolitické soupření Indie a Číny v regionu Indického oceánu. Indie a Čína jsou rostoucími mocnostmi, které se staly závislé na dovozu energetických surovin a námořní dopravě. Pro obě země je důležité udržení námořní bezpečnosti a v obouch zemích můžeme v posledních letech pozorovat nárůst investic do modernizace námořnictva. Teoretická část práce se zabývá různými koncepty strategie vyvažování. Následující kapitola je věnována vymezení regionu Indického oceánu. Dále následuje kapitola věnující se analýze geopolitikcých zájmů Číny v regionu Indického oceánu a strategiemi k jejich dosažení. Pozornost je věnována především strategii tzv. perlového náhrdelníku, vztahu Číny s ostrovními státy v regionu a projektu nové námořní stezky. Následující část se věnuje geopolitikcým zájmům Indie v regionu a tomu, jakým způsobem vnímá čínské pronikání do regionu a jakým způsobem se snaží vyvažovat narůstající vliv Číny v regionu. Pozornost je věnována také vztahům Indie se státy jihovýchodní Asie a Spojenými státy americkými, které mají zásadní vliv na dění v regionu Indo-pacifiku.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of geopolitical rivalry of India and China in the Indian Ocean region. India and China are emerging powers, which have become dependent on import of energy resources. The increasing dependence of India and China on the maritime trade routes led to enlargement of their navies. The theoretical background deals with the diverse concepts of the strategy of balancing.The next part describes the definition of Indian Ocean region. The next part deals with the analyses of Chinese interests in the region and the way China is trying to achieve its objectives. This part is focused on the so called String of Pearls strategy, the change of Chinese relationships with island states in the region and also on the project of Maritime Silk Road. The next part deals with the analyses of Indian national interests in the region and the way India views Chinese presence in the region and the way India is trying to balance Chinese influence in the region. The thesis is also focused on the evolution of India relations with the South East Asian states and the United States of America, which play significant role in the Indo-Pacific region.
