Ageing of ethnic minorities: an overivew

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na otázku stárnutí etnických menšin z pohledu Velké Británie a Spojených států amerických. Tyto dvě země byly vybrány z důvodu jejich multikulturnosti způsobené velkými migračními vlnami, které proběhly dříve v historii, nebo i v posledních letech. Tyto země se navíc již tento jev pokoušejí aktivně řešit. Hostitelské země ve většině případů považují imigraci přistěhovalců za dočasný jev a nepočítají s možností, že se osoby rozhodnou v zemi zestárnout. Avšak spousty přistěhovalců, co do země přijdou i s rodinami nebo za rodinami, v zemi již zůstanou. Z tohoto důvodu je a především bude pro hostitelské země důležité tuto otázku řešit. Neboť starší z etnických menšin mají nejen stejné potřeby jako majoritní starší, ale navíc individuální potřeby, které souvisí s jejich kulturou, ve které vyrůstali, a náboženstvím, které vyznávají. Protože země s těmito osobami nepočítají, nenabízí jim žádné zvláštní zacházení, což pro starší z etnických menšin představuje problém. České republika se neřadí mezi multikulturní země, avšak i k nám imigrují nebo již imigrovaly osoby, které se zde rozhodly zůstat, a proto i pro naši zemi bude důležité se tímto tématem zabývat. Cílem této práce je zmapování jednotlivých problémů/překážek, se kterými se starší z etnických menšin vypořádávají v hostitelských zemích. Jedná se o přehled dosavadních dostupných materiálů, zabývající se touto tématikou. Je zde také diskutována situace v České republice a zamyšlení nad dalším možným vývojem v naší zemi.

Abstract:

The bachelor´s thesis is focusing on the issue of ageing of ethnic minorities in the United Kingdom and in the U. S. A.. These two countries have been chosen because of the heterogeneity of their population caused by huge migration waves in the history or even in the past few years. Furthermore, both of these states are almost the only ones which are actively trying to deal with this phenomenon. In most cases, host countries consider the immigration as a temporary apparition and they do not count with the possibility that immigrants decide to grow old in there. Nevertheless, it is a common experience and besides the older ones from the minorities has got individual needs related to their culture or religion. Unfortunately, host countries do not offer any special treatment or programs for immigrants from various culture and religion background to participate in. This is the main reason why not only these two host countries but all of them will have to solve the problem of ageing of the ethnic minorities. The Czech Republic does not belong among the multicultural countries, however, even here the number of immigrants who decided to stay here is rapidly rising. That is why it is important issue for our country as well. The aim of this thesis is to analyze existing papers or researches concerning this theme from the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. In successive steps problems/obstacles of the old ones from the ethnic minorities will be described in this thesis. Also there will be a discussion about current situation in the Czech Republic and thoughts including possible future development.
