Effect of Language Learning Strategies on Pupils Achievement in the Process of English Language Learning

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Vliv výuky strategií učení na výsledky žáků v anglickém jazyce“ pojednává o akčním výzkumu na základní škole založeném na seznámení žáků s pojmem strategií učení, výběrem vhodných strategií učení, jejich procvičováním a upevňováním v průběhu běžného vyučovacího procesu. V kvazi-experimentálním designu jsou srovnány výsledky dvou paralelních skupin žáků v 6. a následně pak 7. ročníku, kdy kontrolní skupina pracovala běžnými výukovými metodami, a v experimentální skupině učitel realizoval systematickou podporu strategií učení. Pomocí dotazníkového šetření bylo zjišťováno, jaké strategie učení žáci sledované skupiny používají a jaké strategie učení učitelé ve výuce podporují. V návaznosti na zjištěné výsledky byla navržena přímá podpora strategií ve výuce, poté byl proces výuky strategií evaluován, zrevidován a následně byl implementován další cyklus vhodných strategií učení, který pak byl také evaluován. Diplomová práce zjistila znatelné zlepšení výsledků žáků experimentální skupiny oproti kontrolní skupině v části porozumění čtenému textu, tedy v té části, kde byly procvičovány a upevňovány strategie učení.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis „Effect of Language Learning Strategies on Pupils´ Achievement in the Process of English Language Learning“ deals with the action research in elementary education based on learning strategies acquisition, choosing of suitable and convenient learning strategies, their practising and consolidation in ordinary English lessons. In quasi-experiment design the results of two parallel groups of pupils in 6th and subsequently in 7th grade are compared. The control group follows the standard curriculum while the teacher of the experimental group realises the systematic learning-strategies-teaching methods. An inquiry which learning strategies were used by the pupils of observed group and which learning strategies were supported by the teacher in English education was made in terms of questionnaires. In accordance with the gained results the prime teaching-learning-strategies-support was designed, after that the education process was evaluated and revised. Subsequently, the second cycle of suitable learning strategies was implemented and evaluated afterwards. The diploma thesis elicits perceptible progress in the experimental group in comparison with the control group in the reading comprehension part, thus in the part, where the learning strategies were trained and strengthen.
