Financial derivatives and their role in the 2008 financial crisis

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je vyhodnotit vliv derivátů na vznik finanční krize v roce 2008 a poukázat na to, že se jednalo o vysoce toxická aktiva, která prohlubovala rizika a nejistoty ve finančním systému, a která způsobila, že se finanční krize rozšířila do celého světa a měla tak obrovské následky. První kapitola se zaměřuje na teorii finanční krize a druhá kapitola na teorii finančních derivátů. Třetí kapitola analyzuje příčiny americké hypoteční krize 2007, kterými jsou splasknutí internetové bubliny, události 11. září 2001, růst rizikových hypoték, růst nemovitostního trhu, problém stínového bankovnictví a špatná legislativa. Čtvrtá kapitola analyzuje příčiny finanční krize 2008 ve spojitosti s finančními deriváty, kterými jsou deregulace, sekuritizace, ratingové agentury a nezodpovědné a neetické chování. Pátá kapitola objasňuje roli a vliv derivátů na vznik finanční krize a uvádí několik důvodů, proč byly deriváty toxická aktiva. V této kapitole jsou zmapovány a zanalyzovány události, které nastaly po splasknutí bubliny na nemovitostním trhu, kdy dlužníci přestali splácet své závazky a strukturované cenné papíry začaly rapidně ztrácet na hodnotě, dále jsou zanalyzovány dopady na hypoteční a derivátový trh a detailněji popsán krach Too Big to Fail banky, Lehman Brothers.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the impact of derivatives on the 2008 financial crisis and to show that they were highly toxic assets that exacerbated risks and uncertainties in the financial system and caused the financial crisis to spread globally with huge consequences. The first chapter focuses on the theory of the financial crisis and the second chapter on the theory of financial derivatives. The third chapter analyzes the causes of the 2007 US mortgage crisis, which are the bursting of the internet bubble, the events of September 11, 2001, the growth of subprime mortgages, the growth of the real estate market, the problem of shadow banking, and bad legislation. The fourth chapter analyses the causes of the 2008 financial crisis in relation to financial derivatives, which are deregulation, securitisation, credit rating agencies and irresponsible and unethical behaviour. The fifth chapter explains the role and influence of derivatives in the emergence of the financial crisis and gives several reasons why derivatives were toxic assets. This chapter maps and analyses the events that occurred after the bursting of the housing bubble, when borrowers stopped paying their obligations and structured securities began to rapidly lose value, analyses the impact on the mortgage and derivatives markets, and details the collapse of the Too Big to Fail bank, Lehman Brothers.
