Factors that impact reading habits of Czech and American fourth grade elementary students: an international study

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na popis a analýzu faktorů, které ovlivňují čtenářství žáků 4. ročníku primární školy v Brně a v Haywardu (Kalifornie, Spojené státy americké). Teoretická část práce je věnována ukotvení problematiky, a to hned z několika hledisek: (a) literárně-historického, (b) literárně-teoretického, (c) didaktického a (d) obecně pedagogického. Představujeme vývoj literárního vzdělávání (včetně jeho průniků do výuky čtení) primární školy jak u nás, tak i ve Spojených státech amerických. Dále definujeme pojmy: funkční gramotnost, čtenářská gramotnost a literární gramotnost. Snažíme se postihnout jejich hierarchii, ale zároveň si všímat, jak se mezi sebou jednotlivé gramotnosti prolínají a navzájem se ovlivňují. V další kapitole se zabýváme představením českého kurikula: Rámcového vzdělávacího programu a amerického kurikulárního dokumentu Standardy společného základu. V případě amerického kurikula si klademe za cíl představit jeho koncepci a obsah, především pro výuku anglického jazyka a čtení. V závěru kapitoly se vyjadřujeme k některým rozdílnostem amerického a českého kurikula v pojetí výuky čtení a literární výchovy. Jednu ze stěžejních částí naší práce spatřujeme v kapitole prezentující metodologii našeho mezinárodního výzkumu. V rámci jednotlivých částí této kapitoly představujeme design výzkumu, výzkumný nástroj, cíle výzkumu, statistické hypotézy a výzkumné soubory pro každé šetření zvlášť. Nejdříve pro brněnský (kvantitativní a kvalitativní šetření) a poté pro haywardský výzkum (kvantitativní šetření). Pro kvantitativní šetření obou zastoupených zemí jsme zvolili dotazník vytvořený pro zmapování faktorů ovlivňujících čtenářství žáka 4. ročníku primární školy. Dotazníky byly určeny: (a) žákům, (b) rodičům, (c) učitelům a (d) vedení školy. Pro kvalitativní šetření, které jsme realizovali pouze na našem území, jsme zvolili metodu recepce uměleckého prozaického textu a rozhovor (vybraných žáků: čtenář stálý a nečtenář), při němž byly uplatněny postupy literárněvýchovné interpretace textu. To vše v návaznosti na předchozí dotazníkové šetření. Poslední část disertační práce je věnována výsledkům výzkumu. Nejdříve se zaměřujeme na představení brněnských výsledků obou jeho šetření (kvantitativního a kvalitativního), poté na výsledky haywardského výzkumu. Popisujeme povahu naměřených dat, testujeme jejich normalitu a charakterizujeme statistické metody. Zjistili jsme např., že čtení měli více v oblibě američtí žáci než čeští.

Abstract:

In the dissertation, we focus on the definition and analysis of the factors which affect the reading habits of students in the fourth grade of elementary school in the Brno, Czech Republic as well as Hayward, California. The theoretical portion of the study has been dedicated to establishing several challenges from the following points of view: (a) literary-historical, (b) literary-theoretical, (c) didactic and (d) general education. We introduce the development of literary education, including its connection with reading instruction, in primary school both here in the Czech Republic as well as in the USA. Furthermore, we define the terms functional literacy, reading literacy and literary literacy. We attempt to not only define the hierarchy between the terms, but also determine how they interlink and relate to each other. The subsequent chapter has been focused on interpretation of these curriculum: (a) Framework Education Programme for Elementary Education and (b) Common Core State Standards. The conclusion of this chapter observes the differences in the American and Czech curriculum as it relates to the concept of reading instruction and literary education. One of the most challenging areas of our work are presented in the chapter highlighting the method with which our international research was conducted. The steps introduced within this section include the research design, research tools, the goal of the study, statistical hypotheses and the research files for all individual examination. We began with the study in Brno (including qualitative and quantitative research) and move on to the Hayward study focusing on the quantitative research. We used a questionnaire, created for mapping out the factors which influence the reading habits of fourth grade students, to conduct the quantitative research portion of the study for both the Brno and Hayward schools. The questionnaires were given to: (a) students, (b) parents, (c) teachers and (d) school board. For the qualitative research, which was conducted only in the Czech Republic, we chose a method using artistically prosaic text and an interview with chosen students, during which we applied the steps of artistic interpretation of the literary text. The questions in this section of the research were all related to the original written questionnaire. The final part of the dissertation concentrates on the results of the study. First we examined the outcome of both the quantitative and qualitative studies in Brno followed by the results of the Hayward School study. Our findings included, for example, that the Hayward students enjoyed reading more than the students in Brno.
