Gender differences in online conversation topics and self-disclosure: Content analysis of Czech adolescents’ instant messaging conversations

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývala genderovými rozdíly v konverzačních tématech a sebeodhalování v online komunikaci českých adolescentů. Za využití kvantitativní obsahové analýzy dva kodéři zanalyzovali 2022 autentických online konverzací pocházejících z Facebook Messengerů 22 adolescentů ve věku od 13 do 17 let. Tyto konverzace byly získány ve spolupráci s výzkumným týmem IRTIS. V textu byla vyhledávána specifická témata konverzací a četnosti odhalujících promluv, u nichž byla zjišťována také hloubka a šířka sebeodhalení. Výsledky ukazují, že chlapecké, dívčí nebo smíšené konverzace se opravdu lišily co do typu a četnosti konverzovaných témat. Chlapci konverzovali více o přátelích, spolužácích, veřejných problémech či hraní online a offline her, dívky více diskutovaly o romantických či sexuálních partnerech, členech rodiny a o škole. Co se týče sebeodhalení, rozdíly mezi dívčím a chlapeckým sebeodhalením se objevily spíše v rámci dimenzí sebeodhalení, jako hloubka a šířka, než v samotném sebeodhalení obecně. Zdá se však, že genderové rozdíly v tématech i v sebeodhalování spíše odráží rozdíly z offline prostředí, což podporuje předpoklady co-construction modelu. Výsledky také naznačují důležitost konverzačního partnera při sebeodhalování, a to nejen jeho pohlaví, ale i dalších kvalit, čímž by se podrobněji mohl zabývat budoucí výzkum.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis dealt with gender differences in conversation topics and self-disclosure in online communication of Czech adolescents. Using quantitative content analysis, two coders analysed 2,022 authentic online conversations from Facebook Messenger of 22 adolescents aged 13 to 17. These conversations were obtained in collaboration with the IRTIS research team. Specific topics of conversations and the frequency of self-disclosive utterances were searched in text and the depth and breadth of self-disclosure. The results showed that boys', girls', or mixed conversations differed in discussed topics. Boys talked more about friends, classmates, public issues, or playing online and offline games. On the other hand, girls discussed more frequently romantic or sexual partners, family members, and school. In the case of self-disclosure, the differences between girl's and boy's self-disclosure appeared within the dimensions of self-disclosure, such as depth and breadth, rather than within general self-disclosure. However, gender differences in topics and self-disclosure seem to reflect differences from the offline environment, supporting the co-construction model's assumptions. The results also suggest the importance of the conversational partner in self-disclosure, not only of his gender but also of other qualities, which could be addressed in more detail in future research.
