Concepts of Masculinity in the Literature Written by Women in the 1990s (1996-2000): A german-czech comparison

Abstract:

After decades of feministic study of women and representation of femininity, gender studies finally began also to focus on masculinity, a topic which earlier has been held to be something clear, pre-existing, and unnecessary to be discussed. The primarily sociologically or psychologically driven discussion about masculinity started in the English speaking world and later extended also to the German speaking countries and to the Czech Republic, as well. The present doctoral thesis focuses on connecting the social theory on masculinity with literal works written by female authors in the last decade of the 20th century. The starting point of the literal analysis is the sociological concept of R.W. Connell about "hegemonic masculinity" and the crisis of masculinity discussed in the Western literature thoroughly. The present dissertation intends to compare the concept of masculinity in the German and Czech national literature as these countries experienced different historical development, and as feministic movement made different impacts on these literatures. Works of established and recognized German and Czech female authors are analysed such as Marlene Streeruwitz, Birgit Vanderbeke, Alexandra Berková and Irena Dousková.

Abstract:

Po dlouhých desetiletích feministického zkoumání postavení žen a reprezentace ženskosti se v 90. letech 20. století upřel pohled genderových studií konečně i na maskulinitu, která do té doby byla buď opomíjena jako prázdný pojem nebo považována za něco jasného, daného, nediskutovatelného. Nejdříve se převážně sociologicky a psychologicky orientované diskuse o maskulinitě rozšířily v anglosaských zemích, poté pronikly do německy mluvícího světa, posléze i do České republiky. Předkládaná doktorská práce se zaměřuje na propojení sociálních teorií o maskulinitě s literárními reprezentacemi v německé a české literatuře psané ženami v poslední dekádě minulého století. Východiskem se při analýze literárních děl stává sociologický koncept R.W. Connella "hegemoniální mužství" a již několik let zejména v západní literatuře diskutovaná krize mužství. Disertace si klade za cíl porovnat koncepce mužství v obou zmíněných národních literaturách, jež měly v minulosti rozdílný historický vývoj a i feministické hnutí mělo na obě literatury různý vliv. K analyzovaným autorkám patří etablované a uznávané české a německy píšící autorky: Marlene Streeruwitz, Birgit Vanderbeke, Alexandra Berková a Irena Dousková.
