Sensus Communis: An Approach Towards the Conceptual Analysis

Anotace:

Sensus Communis je studie věnovaná ústřednímu pojmu stejnojmenného eseje anglického filosofa Anthony Ashley Coopera Shaftesburyho (1671 – 1713). Je koncipována jako dějinně filosofická práce vystavená na metodologické bázi tzv. konceptuální analýzy, jejímž původcem je německý historiograf a filosof dějin Reinhardt Koselleck, vedoucí mnohosvazkového projektu Geschichthlichen Grundbegriffe. Autor studie Sensus Communis se pokusil na tento v současnosti nejvlivnější metodologický trend v oblasti dějin a dějin myšlení navázat. Shaftesburyho termín, který plní konstitutivně politickou úlohu k tomu totiž přímo vybízí. Práce je tak rozdělena celkem do tří kapitol. První z nich se věnuje těm sférám náboženského života v Anglii 17. století, které formovaly Shaftesburyho religiózní kriticismus a volnomyšlenkářské tendence, jež vyústily v protoromantický theismus, jehož prvním představením byl spis Dopis o entusiasmu. Druhá kapitola je orientována na problematiku kulturně politickou. Věnuje se proto otázkám provázanosti svobodné tvorby a zákona, tedy takovým pojmům, jako je cenzura, či s ní související satira, jejíž popularitu doprovází formování debatních klubů coby tajných formací, které proměňují kavárenské tlachání ve vtipem naplněné řečové hry kulturně-politického plánování, jehož úspěch po roce 1688/9 znamená počátek moderny. První dvě kapitoly tak naplňují studium protolingvistických, povýtce metahistorických determinant, v jejichž kontextuální síti se daný koncept utváří. Třetí kapitola je proto již do značné míry syntetizující a vyzdvihuje konkrétní momenty Shaftesburyho filosofie, které v daném kontextu gradují až k vytvoření nového, politicko filosofického konceptu sensus communis, který starému latinskému sousloví přisoudil charakter mocného společenského organon, v jehož základech zůstává uložen nyní již romanticky uchopený pojem entusiasmu, který balancuje na pomezí náboženského a profánního. Ve vztahu k praxi diachronní analýzy jsou tak sledovány otázky vzniku a transformace těchto konceptů, jež synchronní analýza staví jako kontra-koncepty whigovského politického programu do vědomého protivenství ke kurtoasní, roajalistické kultuře toryů. Studie je doplněna dvěma překlady. Jednak revidovaným překladem Dopisu o entusiasmu a potom novým překladem eseje Sensus Communis. Oba překlady doprovází široký poznámkový aparát.

Abstract:

Sensus Communis is a study focused on the key term of well known essay written by the eighteenth century British philosopher Anthony Ashley Cooper Shaftesbury (1671 – 1713). It is the three part work of history of philosophy based on Reinhardt Koselleck´s methodology of conceptual analysis. Thus the Shaftesbury´s term of sensus communis is to be understood as an operative political weapon. First part of the present study deals with the religious events of 17th century England, as being the basis for Shaftesbury´s critical and free thinking tendencies, which led to the proto-romantical theism presented in his first officially published writing – A Letter Concerning Enthusiasm. The second part of the study deals with the political and cultural life in the period. It tries to answer the questions concerning artistic freedom and law and thus operates with such notions as satire or censure which accompanied the formation of clubs. The clubs are presented here as a secret society, which transformed the coffee-house gossips into the witty speech act of cultural-political planning. The success of this planning after 1688/9 signified the real beginning of modernism. First two parts together traces the net of proto-linguistic, meta-historical determinants creating the concept of sensus communis. The last part is just a kind of synthesis highlighting those points of Shaftesbury´s philosophical thought, which, due to the previously mentioned context, made up the concept of sensus communis a transformation of ancient Latin word. Thus it became an organon of social coexistence based on romantically grasped notion of enthusiasm which balanced between the sacral and the profane. According to the practice of diachronic analysis, the creation and transformation of these concepts are regarded here, which one the synchronic analysis put in opposite as the contra concepts of Whiggish political programme, consciously antagonistic to the curt and royal culture of Tories. The study is accompanied by two Czech translations of Shaftesburys´ texts. The revised translation of A Letter Concerning enthusiasm and the new translation of Sensus Communis. Both of them are supplied with large foot-note commentary.
