Accumulation of foreign exchange reserves in selected Asian economies

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu příčin a popis trendů ve vývoji akumulace devizových rezerv ve třech vybraných asijských ekonomikách, Číně, Singapuru a Hongkongu. V rámci analýzy jsou zkoumány vybrané faktory, jejichž souvislost s položkou devizových rezerv, vychází z jejich věcné podstaty a v rámci práce je tato souvislost následně zkoumána na empirických datech, převážně z platební bilance a výkazu čisté investiční pozice s cílem odhalit a konkretizovat, hlavní příčiny akumulace devizových rezerv v jednotlivých ekonomikách. Obecný rámec práce je tvořen teoriemi zkoumajícími mezinárodní pohyb kapitálu, konkrétně tzv. Lucasovým paradoxem, jehož přítomnost doplňuje pohled o další možné příčiny některých toků kapitálu. Výsledkem práce je popis trendů akumulace devizových rezerv ve vybraných zemích za několik posledních let a stanovení určujících faktorů, které k těmto změnám vedly. Přínos práce je spatřován v možné aplikaci zjištěných trendů a jejich příčin buď na budoucí vývoj v uvažovaných zemích, nebo v patřičné úpravě na vývoj v ekonomikách s podobnými charakteristikami.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the analysis and description of the causes of trends in the accumulation of foreign exchange reserves in three selected Asian economies, China, Singapore and Hong Kong. In the analysis are examined selected factors whose relationship with the foreign reserves, based on their merits and in the work of this association subsequently investigated on empirical data, mainly from the balance of payments and the statement of net investment position to identify and specify the main causes of accumulation of foreign exchange reserves in individual economies. The general framework of work consists of the theories of international movement of capital, specifically called Lucas's paradox, whose presence adds insight about other possible causes of some capital flows.
