Social construction of mental illness

Abstract:

Předkládaná rigorózní práce se skládá z pěti publikovaných článků zaměřených na sociální konstruování duševního onemocnění. První část je věnována vysvětlení procesu a potřeby konstruovat. Konstrukce jsou důležité pro naše porozumění světu a jsou základem pro vznik institucí. Instituce udržují řád, který lidé s duševním onemocněním narušují. Druhá část se zaměřuje na uplatňování našich konstrukcí o duševním onemocnění v praxi. Pokud své představy o klientech s duševním onemocněním nereflektujeme, můžeme klienta poškozovat. Životní situaci klienta lze popsat různými slovy; právě tím, jaká slova volíme, ovlivňujeme konstrukci klientova příběhu. Třetí kapitola obsahuje příklady konstrukcí duševního onemocnění vzhledem k pracovnímu uplatnění z hlediska zaměstnavatele, pomáhajícího pracovníka a člověka s psychiatrickou diagnózou. V závěru zjištěné poznatky a z nich vyvozená doporučení aplikuji sama na sobě. V sebereflexi jsem se zaměřila jak na můj vztah a zkušenosti s pomáhajícími pracovníky, tak na mé vlastní představy o lidech s duševním onemocněním.

Abstract:

The submitted rigorous work consists five published articles which are focused on social construction of the mental illness. First part deals with the explanation of the process and our need to construct. The constructions are very important for our understanding of the world and underpin institutions. The institutions maintain the social order, which people with mental illness infringe (by their different perception). The second part is interested in mechanism of our mental illness construct practice in everyday life. We can disadvantage the client if we are not able to reflect our representations of the mental illness and apply them rigidly. We can use different words to describe the client´s life situation, by the choosing the appropriate words we actively construct his/her story. Third chapter include illustrations of the mental illness construction in context of an employment from the employer´s, helping worker´s and person´s with psychiatric diagnosis point of view. I have applied my findings and recommendations on myself in the conclusion of the paper. I have done self-reflection of my relationship and experiences with helping workers and I have also reflected my representations of the people with mental illness.
