Meaning of life or the path to hell?

Abstract:

Anotace Otázky smyslu života a existence vůbec jsou od nepaměti předmětem filozofických, náboženských a vědeckých spekulací. Díky tomu existuje nepřeberné množství teorií ovlivněných kulturním a ideologickým zázemím. Ke klíčovým osobnostem současné existenciální terapie patří rakouský neurolog a psychiatr Viktor Emil Frankl, jehož teorie zčásti vychází z jeho prožitků vězně koncentračního tábora za druhé světové války. Součástí jeho logoterapeutické metody je přesvědčení, že smysl a důvod k pokračování života lze nalézt ve všech možných formách existence, včetně těch nejbídnějších. Řada expertů soudí, že hranice mezi středním věkem a stářím není ve všech kulturách stejná. Lidé jsou považování za staré v souvislosti se změnami v jejich životních fázích nebo sociálních rolích: když se stanou prarodiči, nebo když začínají pracovat méně či odchází do důchodu. Psycholog a psychoanalytik Erik H. Erikson ve svých osmi vývojových stádiích považuje za úkol stáří periodu Integrita a Nevyrovnanost, během které staří lidé zpětně hodnotí svůj život. Předpokládá se, že lidé, kteří neprojdou úspěšně touto fází, žijí s pocitem, že jejich život neměl valný smysl, což je naplní hořkostí a zoufalstvím. Naopak ti lidé, kteří disponují nadhledem a jsou hrdí na své dosavadní výkony, pociťují integritu a smysluplnost dalšího života. V konečném důsledku to vede k otevření se životní moudrosti, která snese i konfrontaci se smrtí. Klíčová slova: smysl života, stáří, integrita, logoterapie

Abstract:

Resumé The meaning of life constitutes a philosophical question concerning the purpose and significance of life or existence in general. It has been the subject of much philosophical, scientific, and theological speculation throughout history. There have been a large number of theories to these questions from many different cultural and ideological backgrounds. However, to one of the key figures in existential therapy and a prominent source of inspiration for humanistic psychologists today belongs Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor Viktor Emil Frankl. He describes a psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most sordid ones, and thus a reason to continue living. Many experts agree that the boundary between middle age and old age does not have the same meaning in all societies. People can be considered old because of certain changes in their activities or social roles: when they become grandparents, or when they begin to do less or different work — retirement. In Erik Erikson’s Eight Stages of Life theory is old age a period of Integrity vs. Despair, during which a person focuses on reflecting back on their life. In fact, those who are unsuccessful during this phase will feel that their life has been wasted and will experience many regrets. The individual will be left with feelings of bitterness and despair. Those who feel proud of their accomplishments will feel a sense of integrity. Successfully completing this phase means looking back with few regrets and a general feeling of satisfaction.
