Neighborly relations in the Czech and German social discourse

Abstract:

Dvojí pohled na interpretaci některých momentů společných dějin a právních aktů komplikuje dodnes mnohá klíčová jednání v rámci česko-německých vztahů. Práce se pokusí zaměřit na vývoj česko-německých vztahů od podepsání česko-německé deklarace v roce 1997 do roku 2007 a více pozornosti věnovat analýze vývoje vztahů po pěti a deseti letech. Vzhledem k rozsáhlosti problematiky se omezuji na analýzu mediálního diskursu Hospodářských novin a Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Cílem zkoumání je zjistit, jak se vzájemné vztahy utvářely během deseti let od podepsání česko-německé deklarace, a zda se díky ní podařily problémy minulosti uzavřít. Analýza ukazuje, že deklarace k překonání traumat minulosti přímo nevedla. Témata minulosti se více či méně stále objevovala. Lze tedy soudit, že problémy minulosti se ještě objevovat budou a potrvá dlouho, než se situace zcela uklidní.

Abstract:

Even nowadays, many key negotiations between the Czech Republic and Germany are being complicated by the two possible perspectives on the interpretation of certain moments in common history and of several legal acts. This paper will try to focus on the developement of relations between the Czech Republic and Germany from the ratification of the Czech-German declaration in 1997 to the year 2007. Closer attention will be paid to an analysis of the developement of the relations after five and ten years. Because of the size of the issue I will specifically concentrate on the analysis of the media discursus of the "Hospodářské noviny" journal and the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" journal. The goal of this resarch is to find out how did the relationships change in the ten year period from the ratification of the Czech-German declaration and if the problems came to an end. The analysis shows that the declaration didn't lead directly to overcoming the problems. The difficulties of the past are still emerging from time to time. From this we can anticipate their continuous reappearances even in the future and assume that it will take a long time for the situation to become absolutely calm.
