The relationship between smartphone use and school achievement in younger school-age children.

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je zjistit, zda existuje souvislost mezi mírou používání smartphonů a školní úspěšností u dětí mladšího školního věku. Byl zvolen kvantitativní výzkumný design. Ke zjišťování míry používání smartphonů jsem použila upravenou českou verzi dotazníku CIUS (The Compulsive Internet Use Scale), školní úspěšnost jsem zjišťovala pomocí pololetních známek z českého jazyka, anglického jazyka a matematiky. Výzkumným souborem (N=217) jsou žáci 4. a 5. tříd základních škol v Moravskoslezském kraji. Dotazníky byly rozdány ve třídách ve formě tužka-papír. K ověření vztahu mezi mírou používání smartphonů a jednotlivými předměty jsem použila Spearmanův korelační koeficient. Signifikantní vztah se ukázal pouze u českého jazyka (p<0,05; ?=0,216) a matematiky (p<0,05; ?=0,146), u anglického jazyka se souvislost neprokázala (p>0,05). Dále jsem pomocí Mann-Whitney U-testu ověřovala, zda je rozdíl ve školní úspěšnosti mezi žáky, kteří využívají smartphone pouze pro zábavné účely a žáky, kteří svůj smartphone využívají i pro edukační účely. Rozdíl se ukázal nesignifikantní (p=0,097). Pomocí Mann-Whitney U-testu jsem ověřovala i poslední hypotézu, tvrdící, že dívky vykazují větší míru používání smartphonu než chlapci. Tato hypotéza byla rovněž zamítnuta kvůli nesignifikantnímu výsledku (p=0,564). Tato práce zjistila, že míra používání smartphonu může ovlivňovat školní úspěšnost v rámci českého jazyka a matematiky, na anglický jazyk používání smartphonu nemá vliv. Na školní úspěšnost nemá vliv ani účel, za kterým žáci svůj smartphone využívají a není rozdíl v míře používání smartphonu mezi pohlavím.

Abstract:

The main aim of this study was to examine whether there is a relationship between the extent of smartphone usage and academic achievement in younger school-aged children. A quantitative research design was chosen. To assess the extent of smartphone usage, I utilized a modified Czech version of the CIUS questionnaire (The Compulsive Internet Use Scale), and academic achievement was assessed based on semester grades in Czech language, English language, and mathematics. The research sample (N=217) consisted of students from the 4th and 5th grades of primary schools in the Moravian-Silesian Region. The questionnaires were distributed in classrooms in pencil-paper form. Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to verify the relationship between smartphone usage and individual subjects. A significant relationship was found only in Czech language (p<0.05; ?=0.216) and mathematics (p<0.05; ?=0.146); no significant correlation was found in English language (p>0.05). Furthermore, using the Mann-Whitney U test, I examined whether there is a difference in academic achievement between students who use smartphones only for entertainment purposes and those who use their smartphones for educational purposes as well. The difference again proved to be non-significant (p=0.097). I also tested the hypothesis that girls exhibit a higher level of smartphone usage than boys using the Mann-Whitney U test. This hypothesis was also rejected due to non-significant results (p=0.564). This study found that the extent of smartphone usage may affect academic achievement in Czech language and mathematics, but not in English language. The purpose for which students use their smartphones does not affect academic achievement, and there is no difference in the level of smartphone usage between genders.
