Particle-bound persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere - distribution, fate, effects

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá studiem atmosférických polétavých částic, které jsou významnou složkou znečištění atmosféry. Jejich chování v atmosféře (mobilita, sedimentace, vymývání), právě tak jako jejich škodlivé působení na organismy (schopnost pronikat různě hluboko do dýchacího traktu) do značné míry závisí na jejich velikosti. Ačkoli jsou současné imisní limity v ČR stanoveny pro frakci PM10 (částice <10 μm), bylo již jasně prokázáno, že je to zejména jemná frakce PM2,5 (částice <2,5 μm), která je zodpovědná za zdravotní účinky pozorované v epidemiologických studiích. V poslední době se dokonce široce diskutuje, že zdaleka nejpodstatnější by bylo monitorování ultrajemné frakce PM1 (částice <1 μm). Ačkoli je výzkum atmosférických částic velmi aktuální oblastí současné vědy, stále schází systematická studie, která by spojila toxikologická data nejen s velikostními frakcemi, ale také s jejich chemickým složením a látkami, které mohou být vázané na jejich povrchu. O úvod k takovéto studii se právě pokouší předkládaná diplomová práce. Druhé téma, kterým se práce zabývá, je otázka, nakolik je možné ke vzorkování atmosférických částic využít pasivní vzorkovače na bázi polyuretanové pěny. Ačkoli jsou tato zařízení primárně určena na vzorkování plynné atmosférické frakce, kumulují také – i když méně efektivně – jistou část částic. Kvalitativní a kvantitativní charakterizace této frakce by dále rozšířila možnosti pasivních vzorkovačů jako levné alternativy klasického vysokoobjemového vzorkování.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on the problem of atmospheric particles as an important aspect of the ambient air contamination. Their fate in the atmosphere (mobility, sedimentation, scavenging) as well as their harmful effects on living organisms (their ability to penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract) depend significantly on their size distribution. Although current regulations in the Czech Republic are based on monitoring of the PM10 (particles <10 μm), it has been demonstrated that the fine PM2,5 (particles <2,5 μm) fraction is probably the one responsible for a majority of the health effects observed in the epidemiological studies. A question whether the ultra fine PM1 (particles <1 μm) fraction is not even the better candidate for monitoring is a subject of discussion. Even though the atmospheric particles are a hot area of the current research, there is a lack of systematic studies bringing together toxicological effects not only with the size distribution but also with the chemical composition of particles and pollutants that can be sorbed to their surfaces. This thesis is an attempt for the introduction to such study. A second topic of the thesis is a question to which extent are the passive samplers based on polyurethane foam capable of the particle sampling. Although these devices were designed to sample a gas phase, they accumulate a certain fraction of the atmospheric particles at the same time. Qualitative and quantitative characterization of this fraction would further enhance the applicability of the passive samplers as a cheap alternative of the conventional high volume sampling.
