Causes of high inflation in the context of political instability and central bank (in)dependence: the case of Turkey

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá příčinami vysoké míry inflace, která se v posledních letech stala ve většině zemích často skloňovaným problémem. Práce se zaměřuje na příčiny inflace v rozvíjejících se ekonomikách a snaží se zodpovědět otázku, zda jsou obecně tyto ekonomiky ohroženy inflací více a případně, proč tomu tak je. Jako autorita zodpovídající za míru inflace v ekonomice vystupuje centrální banka. Práce rozebírá její pole působnosti při ovlivňování míry inflace a inflačních očekávání. Při debatách o centrální bance se často hovoří o její nezávislosti. V práci je rozebrán smysl této nezávislosti a souvislost mezi (ne)závislou centrální bankou, chováním politiků a inflací. Tato problematika je detailněji popsána na příkladu Turecka, na jehož centrální banku je v posledních letech pohlíženo poměrně negativně. Jsou zde také analyzovány konkrétní příčiny turecké vysoké inflace, které jsou zasazeny do celého teoretického kontextu.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the causes of the high inflation rate, which has become a frequently mentioned problem in most countries in recent years. The thesis focuses on the reasons for inflation in emerging economies and seeks to answer the question of whether these economies are generally more vulnerable to inflation and, if so, why this is the case. The authority responsible for the inflation rate is the central bank. This paper seeks to analyse its scope in correcting inflation. When discussing the central bank, there is often talk of its independence. This paper examines the meaning of independence and the link between an (in)dependent central bank, the behavior of politicians and inflation. This issue is discussed in more detail using the example of Turkey, whose central bank has been perceived rather negatively in recent years. The specific causes of high inflation in Turkey are also analysed and put into the whole theoretical context.
