School motivation and socioeconomic status of the Czech elementary school students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá teorií dosažení cílů popisujících výkonovou motivaci dle Elliota a jeho kolegů (2011), její souvislosti se socioekonomickým statutem dle Hobzy (2017) a školní známkou z předmětu matematiky. Teoretická část popisuje pojem motivace a témat s tím spojených, včetně modelu výkonové motivace 3x2 rozděleného do 6 dílčích cílů, kterými se zde zabýváme. Je zde popsána také důležitost výkonové motivace v oblastech školní docházky, klasifikace, aktivity v hodinách žáků a role jejich socioekonomického statutu. Dále popisuje socioekonomický status jak obecně, tak spolu s žáky, kteří do této skupiny patří. Předpokladem je, že děti pocházející ze socioekonomicky slabších rodin, jsou částečně znevýhodněni vůči většinové společnosti, s čímž by měla souviset i jejich výkonová motivace. Děti, kterými se tato práce zabývá, jsou převážně v období dospívání, tedy pubescence. Empirická část se zaměřila na žáky druhého stupně základních škol a zkoumala vztah mezi socioekonomickým statusem, známkou z předmětu matematiky a výkonovou motivací v učení se na testy. U 15 hypotéz bylo ověřováno korelačními metodami, zda se mezi proměnnými objevil statisticky významný vztah. Výsledky ukázaly, že socioekonomický status má statisticky významný vliv na známky z matematiky a čtyři cíle výkonové motivace konkrétně: task approach (cíl zaměřený na přístup k úkolu), self approach (cíl orientace na sebe), task avoidance (cíl vyhýbání se úkolům) a other avoidance (cíl jiného vyhýbání se). Dále tři cíle výkonové motivace zase vzájemně korelovali se známkami z matematiky a to jsou opět - task approach goal (cíl zaměřený na přístup k úkolu), self approach goal (cíl orientace na sebe) a task avoidance goal (cíl vyhýbání se úkolům). Znamená to, že při zjišťování vlivu socioekonomického statusu na výkon žáků je třeba uvažovat i o relaci k výkonové motivaci. Budoucí výzkum by měl prozkoumat kauzální vztahy mezi uvedenými proměnnými a zjistit, zda výkonová motivace zprostředkovává vztah mezi socioekonomického statusem a výslednou známkou z matematiky.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the theory of achieving goals describing performance motivation according to Elliot and his colleagues (2011), its connection with the socio-economic status according to Hobza (2017) and a school mark from the subject of mathematics. The theoretical part describes the concept of motivation and related topics, including the 3x2 performance motivation model divided into 6 sub-objectives, which we deal with here. It also describes the importance of performance motivation in the areas of school attendance, classification, activities in pupils' lessons and the role of their socio-economic status. It also describes the socio-economic status both in general and together with the pupils who belong to this group. The assumption is that children from socio-economically weaker families are partially disadvantaged compared to the majority society, which should be related to their performance motivation. The children who deal with this work are mostly in adolescence, ie pubescence. The empirical part focused on secondary school students and examined the relationship between socioeconomic status, a grade in mathematics and performance motivation in learning to test. For 15 hypotheses, it was verified by correlation methods whether a statistically significant relationship appeared between the variables. The results showed that socioeconomic status has a statistically significant effect on math grades and four goals of performance motivation, namely: task approach, self approach, task avoidance, and other avoidance. Furthermore, the three goals of performance motivation correlated with marks from mathematics, and these are again - task approach goal, self approach goal and task avoidance goal. This means that when determining the influence of socio-economic status on pupils' performance, it is necessary to consider the relation to performance motivation. Future research should examine the causal relationships between these variables and determine whether performance motivation mediates the relationship between socioeconomic status and the resulting grade in mathematics.
