Moscow Conceptualism: Context and Contents

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na moskevský konceptualismus – jeden z nejvlivnějších směrů neoficiálního umění SSSR. První konceptuální díla ruských umělců se objevila na konci 60. a na začátku 70. let, když západní konceptualismus byl již vyprofilován. Kulturní tradice ruského umění a vliv totalitního systému přispěly k tomu, že moskevská konceptuální škola získala specifické rysy. Úvodní část práce seznámí čtenáře s problematikou oficiálního a neoficiálního sovětského umění. Následující část práce se věnuje historickému vývoji moskevského konceptualismu, hlavním tématům a zkoumání obsahu tvorby vybraných umělců. Třetí část práce bude zaměřena na komparaci západního a sovětského směru a hledání paralel mezi moskevskou konceptuální školou a ruskou avantgardou.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on Moscow conceptualism – one of the most influential directions of unofficial art in the USSR. Russian artists' first conceptual art pieces appeared in the late 60s – early 70s, when Western conceptualism had already flourished. Thanks to the cultural traditions of Russian art and the influence of the totalitarian system, the Moscow Conceptual School has acquired specific features that allow this direction to be perceived not only as a local version of the global artistic direction but as a cultural phenomenon. The first part of the thesis introduces the reader to the issues of official and unofficial Soviet art. The next part of the work tracks the history of the development of Moscow conceptualism and explores the main themes and contents of the work of selected artists. The third part of the work compares Western and Soviet conceptual art and seeks parallels between the Moscow Conceptual School and the Russian avant-garde.
