The concept of „just war“ and its perception and use in the present day

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou konceptu spravedlivé války a jeho pojetí v současnosti. Tento koncept je starý již několik staletí a mohlo by se tedy zdát, že je zastaralý, avšak v současnosti se v mezinárodních vztazích znovu objevuje, mimo jiné v oblasti humanitárních intervencí. Práce bude zkoumat vnímání a využití kritérií tohoto konceptu ve třech různých případech. Prvním z nich je invaze Spojených států do Iráku v roce 2003, druhým intervence Organizace spojených národů v Mali a třetím boj proti organizaci Islámský stát na území Iráku a Sýrie. V konceptuální části práce bude nejprve představen historický vývoj kritérií spravedlivé války a jejich vnímání v současnosti, v analytické části práce pak budou tato kritéria aplikována na zmíněné případy. Práce také bude zkoumat rétoriku a argumentaci relevantních aktérů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the analysis of the "just war" concept and its perception in the present day. This concept was developed centuries ago, and so it might seem that it is outdated, but it is currently again coming into focus in international relations, for example in the case of humanitarian interventions. This thesis will be analyzing the perception and use of the criteria of this concept in three different cases. The first case is the U. S. invasion to Iraq in 2003, the second one is the intervention by the United Nations in Mali and the third one is the fight against Islamic State. The historical development of the just war criteria and their current perception will be presented in the conceptual part of this thesis, while in the analytical part these criteria will be applied to aforementioned cases. This thesis will also analyze the rhetoric and argumentation of relevant actors.
