Careers of excellent female scientists

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá životní dráhou excelentních vědkyň, které působí v genderově netypických oborech a pohybují se převážně v maskulinním pracovním prostředí. Cílem práce je popsat jejich životní dráhu z pohledu pracovního i osobního života. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části – teoretickou a empirickou. Teoretická část se nejdříve zabývá konceptem genderové rovnosti a rozebírá přetrvávající genderové nerovnostmi na českém trhu práce. Dále nabízí statistický přehled o postavení žen v české vědě ve srovnání se stavem v ostatních zemích Evropské unie a pojednává o znevýhodněních a stereotypech, kterým ženy ve vědě čelí. Závěrečná kapitola se věnuje problematice slaďování vědecké kariéry a rodinného života, bariérami, se kterými se vědkyně-matky potýkají a strategiemi pro jejich překonávání. Empirická část představuje metodologii realizovaného kvalitativního výzkumného šetření, na kterou navazuje interpretace výsledků výzkumu, závěrečné shrnutí a diskuze.

Abstract:

This master's thesis examines the life paths of excellent female scientists who work in gender-atypical fields and are predominantly in masculine work environments. The aim of the thesis is to describe their life paths in terms of their professional and personal lives. The thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part first deals with the concept of gender equality and analyses the persistent gender inequalities on the Czech labour market. It then offers a statistical overview of the position of women in Czech science in comparison with the situation in other EU countries and discusses the disadvantages and stereotypes that women face in science. The final chapter deals with the issue of reconciling a scientific career and family life, the barriers faced by female scientists and strategies for overcoming them. The empirical part presents the methodology of the qualitative research, followed by the interpretation of the research results, final summary and discussion.
