The Translation of Humour in How I Met Your Mother

Anotácia:

Tato práce se zabývá překladem humoru a technikami, které mohou tento proces ulehčit. V první části práce, která je teoretická, je stručně popsaný audiovizuální překlad a dabing. Následně je vysvětleno, co je to vlastně humor a jak funguje, popsán je i překlad jako obecná disciplína a dále jsou vysvětleny různé techniky používané při překládání humoru a vtipů. Druhá část práce je praktická analýza, hlavním zdrojem pro analýzu je americký sitkom Jak jsem poznal vaši matku (How I Met Your Mother). Zaměřuje se primárně na verbální humor a zkoumá metody, které mohly být při překladu aplikovány a následně zjišťuje, zda se jedná o přímý překlad nebo zda bylo potřeba vtipy adaptovat pro české prostředí. V práci jsou uvedeny konkrétní příklady z analýzy, které jsou obohacené o komentáře.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the translation of humour and the techniques that can be used to simplify this process. The first part of the thesis is theoretical and outlines a brief introduction to the world of audio-visual translation and dubbing, then it explains what humour is and how it works. It also talks about translation in general and then covers a few techniques used in humour translation. The second part is practical and consists of the analysis itself. Examples of jokes are presented along with comments and statistics. The main source for the analysis is an American sitcom How I Met Your Mother. It is mainly focused on verbal humour and explores the methods used to translate the jokes and discusses weather the jokes are translated directly or adapted for the Czech audience.
