Analysis of partnership in the context of life satisfaction in the Czech republic in 1991-2008

Abstract:

Základní otázka, jíž se tato práce zabývá, se táže na vliv partnerského soužití na životní spokojenost jedince. Analýza Evropského výzkumu hodnot ze tří vln šetření se pokouší objasnit, zda partnerský vztah v dnešní době ještě znamená hlavní oporu ve vnějším světě, anebo se partnerské pouto, přinejmenším dočasně, stává pro stále větší počet lidí překážkou na cestě k uspokojení individuálních zájmů. Pojítko mezi celkovou spokojeností v životě a kategorií rodinného stavu odkrývá hodnotovou orientaci lidí vůči manželství ale i vůči dlouhodobým neinstitucionalizovaným partnerským svazkům a rovněž odráží změnu těchto postojů v průběhu osmnácti let, které výběrová data reprezentují. Současně se ukazuje jistá úměra mezi rostoucí spokojenosti lidí a snižujícím se pocitem plné kontroly nad jejich vlastním životem. Výsledky analýzy dávají také nahlédnout, že se v České republice ustavují dva hlavní typy nesezdaného soužití – předmanželské a po-rozvodové či vdovecké, u kterých se v průběhu let spokojenost kohabitantů ve středním a zralém věku navyšuje. Míry životní spokojenosti u svobodných mužů a žen, které se vyrovnávají na hladině spokojenosti lidem v manželství, zase odhalují východiska české společnosti k reprodukci, pro niž je dosud sdílený život mezi dvěma partnery základem.

Abstract:

The main question this thesis is attempting to answer, asks how intimate relationships influence an individual's satisfaction with his own life. The analysis of three waves of enquiry from the European Values Study is attempting to resolve whether relationships today still remain one of the main footholds in the external world, or if the partner bond is at least temporarily becoming an obstacle for more and more people on the way to satisfying their individual needs. The bond between overall satisfaction and the nature of the individual's marital status uncovers people's orientation of values towards marriage, but also towards non-institutionalized long-term relationships. It also reflects the change of these attitudes in the past eighteen years that are covered in the data. At the same time a certain correlation between the rising happiness of people and a decreasing sense of full control over their lives emerges. The results of this analysis show us, that two main types of non-married couples established themselves in the Czech Republic – pre-marital and post-divorce couples. Inside these couples the satisfaction of co-habitants rises after time in the middle life. The rates of satisfaction of single men and women are on a similar level of those who live in marriage. This shows us a resort of the Czech society towards reproduction, for which the sharing of life by two partners was essential so far.
