Crisis in PIIGS Countries – Reasons, Impacts and Solutions

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to identify the causes based on analysis of selected indicators, and point out consequences, as well as possible solutions to the crisis in the PIIGS countries (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain). The first chapter summarizes the theoretical basis of three areas:  economic and monetary integration in the European Union,  crisis and its definition, classification of crises, possible prevention, and introduction to the issue of global crisis,  characteristics of selected macroeconomic indicators. In the second chapter we focus on the causes and consequences of the crisis in the PIIGS countries. Analysis of selected indicators of the macroeconomic environment is followed by defining the specifics of the PIIGS countries in the context of the crisis – including starting points, consequences, and actions taken. Chapter three focuses on the solutions to the current crisis in the European Union with a focus on the European Financial Stability Facility and the European Stability Mechanism, the procedures of the European Central Bank and the banking union.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce je na základe analýzy vybraných ukazovateľov identifikovať príčiny, poukázať na dôsledky a možné riešenia krízy v krajinách PIIGS (Portugalsko, Írsko, Taliansko, Grécko a Španielsko). Prvá kapitola sumarizuje teoretické východiská z troch oblastí:  hospodárska a menová integrácia v Európskej únii,  kríza a jej vymedzenie, delenie kríz, ich možná prevencia a úvod do problematiky svetovej krízy,  charakteristika vybraných makroekonomických ukazovateľov. V druhej kapitole sa zameriavame na príčiny a dôsledky krízy v krajinách PIIGS. Na analýzu vývoja vybraných ukazovateľov makroekonomického prostredia nadväzuje vymedzenie špecifík krajín PIIGS v kontexte krízy – od východísk, cez priebeh až po dôsledky a prijaté opatrenia. Predmetom tretej kapitoly sú riešenia súčasnej krízy v Európskej únii so zameraním na Európsky finančný stabilizačný nástroj a Európsky stabilizačný mechanizmus, postupy Európskej centrálnej banky a bankovú úniu.
