Representations and evaluation of gender categories

Abstract:

Disertační práce je zaměřená na sociálně psychologickou analýzu genderu. V teoretické části jsou představeny základní přístupy ke zkoumání pohlaví a genderu, různá pojetí femininity a maskulinity a nástroje k jejich měření. Dále je věnována pozornost genderovým stereotypům, genderovým postojům a reprezentacím genderové identity jako důležitým komponentám systému genderových přesvědčení. Nejrozsáhlejší kapitola se zabývá genderovými a pohlavními rozdíly z hlediska evoluční psychologie, vývojových teorií a sociálně-psychologického. Poslední oddíl postihuje teorii a empirické zkoumání sociálních reprezentací. Empirická část je sestavena ze dvou studií, které postihují různé aspekty genderových kategorií v našem kulturním prostředí. První z nich se zabývá sociálními normami mužství a ženství v rámci charakteristik agency-communion, předmětem druhé studie jsou sdílené obsahy a významy mužství a ženství. Oba výzkumy jsou postaveny na odlišných metodách, jejichž srovnání je diskutováno v závěrečné části.

Abstract:

Dissertation is focused on social-psychological analysis of gender. Theoretical part deals with the main approaches to the study of sex and gender, different definitions of femininity and masculinity and the methods of their measurement. Further on gender stereotypes, gender attitudes and representations of gender identity as important parts of the gender belief system are introduced. The following chapter is focused on the analysis of sex and gender differences from the different theoretical perspectives – evolutionary, developmental and social psychology. The last chapter is dedicated to the theory and research of social representations. The research part is based on the two studies which are focused on different components of gender categories in the Czech cultural context. The first one explores the social norms of femininity and masculinity within the dimensions of agency-communion. The second one explores the meanings and evaluative contents of female and male gender category. The both studies are based on different methodology (agency-communion scale and the questionnaire of free associations) which are compared.
