Lithology of active layer on James Ross Island

Abstract:

Poloostrov Ulu, periglaciální oblast na severozápadním pobřeží ostrova Jamese Rosse, poskytuje optimální podmínky ke studiu litologických vlastností činné vrstvy. V odledněných oblastech poloostrova byla činná vrstva zkoumána z hlediska zrnitosti a geochemie na 8 profilech, z nichž 4 se nachází na původních křídových sedimentárních horninách vyznačujících se velmi jemnozrnným litologickým materiálem. Další 3 profily jsou lokalizovány na neogenních vulkanických horninách a zbylý profil se nachází na neogenních ledovcových až mořských sedimentárních horninách, které jsou typické svojí různorodostí. Geochemické vlastnosti činné vrstvy odpovídají jejím zrnitostním vlastnostem a také fyzikálnímu zvětrávání. Zrnitostní analýzy činné vrstvy byly provedeny metodou analytického sítování a laserové granulometrie. Rentgenovou fluorescenční spektroskopií byly stanoveny podíly hlavních a stopových litofilních prvků a jejich prvkové poměry.

Abstract:

The Ulu Peninsula, a periglacial area on the northwest coast of James Ross Island, provides optimal conditions for studying the lithological properties of the active layer. In the deglaciated areas of the peninsula, the active layer was investigated in terms of grain size and geochemistry on 8 profiles, 4 of which are located on the original Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, characterized by very fine-grained material. The other 3 profiles are located on Neogene volcanic rocks and the remaining profile is located on Neogene glacial to marine sedimentary rocks, which are typical for their diversity. The geochemical properties of the active layer correspond to the grain size properties as well as to the physical weathering. Grain size analyzes of the active layer were performed by analytical sieving and laser granulometry. The proportions of major and trace lithophile elements and their elemental ratios were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy.
