Gender differences

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zjistit, jaké jsou rozdíly mezi muži a ženami v rámci sobě připisované míry maskulinity a feminity, agresivity (tj. agresivity fyzické, verbální, hostility a hněvu) a poměru ukazováčku a prsteníčku a zda-li mezi těmito proměnnými existují lineární vztahy. Dále jsou zjišťovány i úrovně žádoucí maskulinity a feminity ideálního nejlepšího přítele a ideálního partnera, které jsou konfrontovány s jim přímo přisouzeným žádoucím pohlavím za účelem ověření konceptu maskulinity a feminity a prototypičnosti přátelství mezi osobami stejného pohlaví. Míra agresivity je zjišťována pomocí dotazníku BPAQ (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire; Buss & Perry, 1992). Inventář ke zjištění úrovně maskulinity a feminity vychází z inventáře BSRI (Bem's Sex Role Inventory; Bem, 1974). Měření ukazováčku a prsteníčku je prováděno samostatně každým jednotlivým respondentem. Výzkumný soubor tvoří celkem 322 osob, z toho 98 mužů a 224 žen. Věk respondentů se pohybuje od 19 do 35 let (m = 23,3, sd = 3,12). Výsledky ukazují, že muži dosahují vyšší úrovně maskulinity než feminity a ženy naopak. Míra sobě připisované maskulinity je pak vyšší u mužů než u žen, které zase dosahují vyšší úrovně feminity oproti mužům. S tímto korespondují i výsledky analýzy žádoucí maskulinity a feminity ideálního nejlepšího přítele a ideálního partnera, kdy je vyšší úroveň maskulinity než feminity spojena s jim přímo přisouzeným žádoucím mužským pohlavím, zatímco vyšší úroveň feminity než maskulinity souvisí s žádoucím ženským pohlavím. Výrazně častěji je pak žádoucí pohlaví ideálního nejlepšího přítele totožné s pohlavím respondenta než s pohlavím opačným. Genderové rozdíly v míře maskulinity a feminity jsou statisticky významné (sig. = 0,05), avšak fakticky se průměrné hodnoty pro muže a ženy liší o méně než jednu směrodatnou odchylku, což ukazuje na pouze minimální rozdíly. V rámci agresivity jsou výsledky podobné, jelikož zjištěný statisticky významný genderový rozdíl ve fyzické agresivitě, kde dosahují muži vyšších hodnot než ženy, je také menší než jedna směrodatná odchylka a tudíž fakticky minimální. V ostatních měřených typech agresivity genderové rozdíly prokázány nejsou. Pouze minimální faktické, ale statisticky významné rozdíly jsou také zjištěny u poměru ukazováčku a prsteníčku, který mají muži menší než ženy, avšak pouze pro pravou ruku, nikoli pro levou. Lineární vztahy byly zjištěny mezi maskulinitou a fyzickou a verbální agresivitou a celkovým skórem agresivity. Tyto vztahy jsou kladné, tedy s mírou maskulinity roste i míra těchto typů agresivity. Záporné vztahy jsou pak zjištěny mezi těmito stejnými typy agresivity a feminitou, což znamená, že s klesající mírou feminity stoupá míra fyzické, verbální a celkové agresivity. Mezi mírou maskulinity, feminity a agresivity a poměrem ukazováčku a prsteníčku na pravé ruce pak žádné statistické rozdíly zjištěny nejsou. Důvodem toho může být možná nepřesnost měření prstů ruky prováděných přímo respondenty bez odborného dohledu. Bylo by tedy vhodné toto měření zopakovat pomocí expertní metody, např. fotokopií rukou.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to determine what are the differences between men and women in terms of self-ascribed level of masculinity and feminity, aggression (i.e. physical and verbal aggression, hostility and anger) and the ratio of the index finger and ring finger and whether linear relations exist among these variables. Furthermore the levels of desirable masculinity and feminity of ideal best friend and ideal partner are investigated, which are then, in order to verify the concept of masculinity and feminity and prototypes of friendship between individuals of the same sex, faced with desirable gender awarded directly to them. Degree of aggressiveness is determined by questionnaire BPAQ (Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire, Buss & Perry, 1922). Inventory to determine the levels of masculinity and feminity is based on BSRI inventory (Bem’s Sex Role Inventory; Bem, 1974). Measurement of the index finger and ring finger is carried out separately by each individual respondent. The research sample consists of 322 people, 98 of which were men and 224 women. Respondents’ age ranges from 19 to 35 years. The results show that men have higher levels of masculinity than feminity and women vice versa. The level of self-ascribed masculinity is higher in men than in women, who in turn reach higher level of feminity than men. This corresponds with result of analysis of desirable masculinity and feminity in ideal best friend and ideal partner, where a higher level of masculinity than feminity is associated with desirable male sex awarded to them, while a higher level of feminity than masculinity relates to desirable female sex. Desirable sex of ideal best friend is significantly more often the same as respondent’s one than opposite. Gender differences in level of masculinity and feminity are statisticaly significant, but in fact, the average values for men and women differ by less than one standard deviation indicating only minimal differences. The results in terms of aggressiveness are similar because statistically significant gender difference detected in physical aggressivity, where men reach higher values than women, is also lesser than one standard deviation and therefore really minimal. There are no shown gender differences in other types of measured aggression. Only minimal factual but statisticaly significant differences are also shown in the ratio of the index finger and ring finger, which men have smaller than women, however only for right hand, not the left. Linear relationships were found between masculinity and physical and verbal aggressivity and total aggression score. These relationships are positive, i.e. the rate of these types of aggression increases with the degree of masculinity. Negative relationships are then detected between the same types of aggression and feminity which means that the level of physical and verbal aggression increases with the decreasing level of feminity. No statistical differences were found between the level of masculinity, feminity and aggression and the ratio of the index finger and ring finger. The reason for this may be possible inaccuracy of measurements carried out by respondents without professional supervision. It would be useful to repeat the measurements using expert techniques such as hand photocopy.
