Visual Art of Schizophrenics: Art as a Mirror of Psyche

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na schizofrenii, duševní onemocnění, které způsobuje fyzickou i psychickou degeneraci člověka. Ústředním tématem práce je prozkoumat oblast schizofrenie a její vliv na lidskou tvořivost a také vymezit projevy této nemoci ve výtavné tvorbě. Navzdory onemocnění zůstává kreativita nedotčena a v mnoha případech je dokonce velmi intenzivní, což podporují různé experimenty i lékařská a umělecká literatura. Výtvarná tvorba je pro schizofreniky, kvůli jejímu terapeutickému účinku, vhodnou aktivitou. Tato tvůrčí činnost také otevírá cestu k pochopení pacientovy psychiky, a tudíž také možnost pomoci. Práce je rozdělena do tří částí, z nichž první se zabývá schizofrenií a jejími symptomy. Druhá část zkoumá znaky tvorby schizofreniků a třetí část je zaměřena na oblast imaginace a kreativity a je částí souhrnnou, pojednávající o projevu schizofrenních symptomů ve tvorbě. Schizofrenní tvorba je pro dějiny umění významná, neboť byla jedním z pilířů zformování uměleckého směru Art brut ve dvacátém století. Navzdory degenerativnímu onemocnění, jsou schizofrenní díla velmi osobní, staví na historii jednice a stávají se tak zrcadlem schizofrenní pozměněné psychiky.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on schizophrenia, the mental disorder which causes physical and psychological degeneration of human body. The main focus of this thesis is to explore the area of schizophrenia and its impact on area of human creativity. It also finds specific features of illness in visual art. There is an assumption that creativity stays during the illness intact and in many cases it is very intensive. This assumption is supported by some of scientific and psychiatric experiments and by medical and art literature. Visual art can be effective for patient because of its therapeutic effect. This creative activity also opens the way to understand patient´s psyche and through this way it is possible to help him. The thesis is divided into three parts. In the first part there are introduced the historical conditions of the origin of schizophrenia and also its symptoms. In the second part there is discussed creativity and features of schizophrenic art and the last part is focused on imagination and creativity and it becomes the conclusion of previous founding. Schizophrenic art is important in the history of art because it became one of the pillars of formation of Art brut in the twentieth century. Despite this degenerative mental disorder, works are very personal and based on schizophrenic´s history and due to they become a mirror of schizophrenic altered psyche.
