Controversy and magical realism in Salman Rushdies The Satanic Verses

Abstract:

The present thesis attempts to present the Rushdie Affair and its aftermath both from the Western perspective and from the Islamic point of view. It also aims to prove that Rushdie?s notorious novel is neither blasphemous, nor can it be interpreted in an unambiguous manner. This thesis also addresses certain characteristics of magical realism, and it examines the way in which features of magical realist writing have been applied by the author of The Satanic Verses in order to address controversial matters concerning not only the fictionalised history of Islam, but also political and social issues of the Britain of the 1980s.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce má ambici seznámit čtenáře s kauzou Salmana Rushdieho a s jejími následky jak z pohledu západní civilizace, tak z perspektivy islámského světa. Cílem práce je také podat důkaz o tom, že Rushdieho notoricky známý román není rouhačský či bezbožný, a že se nedá vykládat jednoznačným způsobem. Práce se rovněž zaobírá charakteristickými rysy magického realismu a způsobem, jímž tyto rysy autor při psaní díla uplatnil s cílem vyslovit se ke kontroverzním tématům týkajícím se nejen beletrizované historie islámu, ale i politických a společenských problémů v Británii v 80. letech 20. století.
