Culture shock in students from African countries after arriving in the Czech Republic for the purpose of university studies

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem kulturního šoku u studentů z afrických zemí, kteří přichází do České republiky s cílem studovat na místní vysoké škole. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. V teoretické části této práce je vysvětlen kulturní šok, vliv kultury na život jedince a průběh kulturního šoku. Následně je popsán přechod mezi africkou a českou kulturou, role stereotypů, předsudků a rasismu, a v neposlední řadě také zkušenost afrických studentů s českými vysokými školami. Empirická část popisuje výsledky kvalitativního výzkumu, který byl proveden na základě individuálních rozhovorů s osmi respondenty a vyhodnocen metodou otevřeného kódování. Výzkum si kladl za cíl zjistit, jak u studentů kulturní šok probíhal, jaká očekávání studenti měli, které aspekty hrály roli v jejich kulturních prožitcích a jaké změny na sobě při pobytu v České republice studenti zaznamenali. Výzkum ukázal, že měli studenti od České republiky mnohá očekávání, která spolu s předchozími interkulturními zkušenostmi hrála roli ve zkušenosti s jejich pobytem. Studenti zaznamenali za svého pobytu mnohá úskalí, ale také spoustu osobních pozitivních změn a obecně tak byli spokojeni s poskytnutým vzděláním, které bylo jejich hlavním důvodem příchodu do České republiky.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of culture shock in students from African countries who come to the Czech Republic to study at a local university. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part of this thesis explains culture shock, the influence of culture on the life of an individual and the course of culture shock. Subsequently, the transition between African and Czech culture, the role of stereotypes, prejudice and racism, and last but not least the experience of African students with Czech universities are described. The empirical part describes the results of the qualitative research, which was conducted on the basis of individual interviews with eight respondents and evaluated using the open coding method. The research aimed to find out how culture shock was experienced by the students, what expectations the students had, which aspects played a role in their cultural experiences and what changes the respondents noticed in themselves during their stay in the Czech Republic. The research showed, that the students had many expectations of the Czech Republic, which, along with previous intercultural experiences, played a role in their experience of their stay. Respondents experienced many hardships during their stay, but also many personal positive changes and were generally satisfied with the education provided, which was their main reason for coming to the Czech Republic.
