Legal Abortions and Attitudes toward Legal Abortions: Comparison of Czech Republic, The Netherlands and Spain

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o problematice indukovaných potratů ve třech rozdílných státech – České republice, Nizozemsku a Španělsku. Nejprve je představen odlišný sociální a kulturní kontext v těchto zemích. Jsou zde zmíněny rozdíly v legální dostupnosti potratu a porovnán vývoj indukované potratovosti v jednotlivých zemích. Dále se práce zabývá tím, zda a jak se tyto země liší v postojích k potratům. Tomu se věnuje sekundární analýza dat z komparativního výzkumu European Values Study z let 1999/2000. Na základě analýzy byly identifikovány dva faktory ovlivňující postoje k potratu – religiozita a sexuální permisivita, jenž jsou pro všechny země společné, avšak intenzita jejich působení je rozdílná. Z analyzovaných zemí nejvíce vybočuje Španělsko, což je stát s významnou náboženskou tradicí, jenž se odrazila v legislativních omezeních přístupu k indukovanému potratu. Ze statistické analýzy vyplynulo, že Španělé se k potratu staví negativněji než Češi a Nizozemci. Češi a Nizozemci se k potratům staví podobně, ač tyto země prošly odlišným vývojem. V Nizozemsku je přístup k potratům liberální, zároveň jsou zde dlouhodobě nízké hodnoty indexu indukované potratovosti. České ženy potrat v minulosti často podstupovaly, v současné době ale dochází k proměně reprodukčního chování, jehož součástí je i silný pokles hladiny potratového indexu. To souvisí s rozšiřováním kvalitní antikoncepce, efektivnější sexuální výchovou a s tolerantním a otevřeným postojem k sexualitě.

Abstract:

This paper deals with an issue of induced abortion in three different counties – The Czech Republic, The Netherlands and Spain. At first the diverse social and cultural context is introduced. There are mentioned differences in legal accessibility of abortion and is compared development of induced abortions in particular countries. Then the paper engages in, if and how these countries differ on attitudes towards abortions. To this point is devoted secondary analysis of data from European Values Study from 1999/2000. On the basis of the analysis were identified two factors influencing the attitudes towards abortion – religiosity and sexual permissiveness which are common for all countries but intensity of their effects is different. From analyzed countries mostly varies Spain. It is the state with significant religious tradition that has influenced legislative accessibility to induced abortion. From analysis ensued that Spaniards have more negative attitude toward abortion than Czechs and Netherlanders. Czechs and Netherlanders have similar attitude, although these countries have gone through different development. In the Netherlands is liberal access to abortions, at the same time there are low values of induced abortion’s index in the long term. Czech women often underwent abortion in the past but recently it happens change of reproductive behavior whose part is rapid decline of level of induced abortion’s index. It is connected with distribution of quality contraception, more effective sexual education and with tolerant and open attitude toward sexuality.
