The influence of mortality salience on the relationship between attachment and authoritarianism

Abstract:

V této studii testujeme předpoklad, že vztah mezi autoritářstvím a citovou vazbou se projeví pouze v podmínkách mortality salience (MS). Citová vazba v situaci ohrožení neposkytuje nejistým osobám dostatečně účinné strategie pro její zvládání, proto by jejich obrana mohla spočívat v silnějším přilnutí k autoritářským postojům. Konkrétně předpokládáme vztahy mezi úzkostností a pravicovým autoritářstvím (RWA) a mezi vyhýbavostí a sociálně dominantní orientací (SDO). Výzkumný soubor tvoří 143 studentů gymnázií hodonínského okresu (100 žen a 43 mužů), s průměrným věkem 17,5 let (SD = 1,01). MS nijak neovlivnilo sílu vztahu mezi kvalitou citové vazby a RWA a SDO - mezi úzkostností a RWA nebyla nalezena žádná souvislost; vyhýbavost statisticky významně zvyšovala SDO, a to nezávisle na podmínkách. Nepotvrzený vliv MS může být následkem neúspěšné manipulace nezávislou proměnnou, která spočívala v náhodném přidělení otázek týkající se buď vlastní smrti (priming MS) nebo bolesti zubů (kontrolní skupina). Účastníci na dotazy o smrti odpovídali ze svého filozofického či náboženského hlediska, což naznačuje, že pocity ohrožení a úzkosti, které by mohly vést k silnějšímu vztahu mezi autoritářstvím a citovou vazbou, se u nich neobjevily.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyse the assumption that the relationship between authoritarianism and attachment is expressed only under conditions of mortality Salience (MS). In distress situations attachment of unsecure persons does not provide effective coping strategies, therefore their defence against distress might be stronger adherence to authoritarian attitudes. To be more precise, we presume the relationships between attachment anxiety and Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA) as well as between attachment avoidance and Socially Dominance Orientation (SDO). The sample consists of 143 students of grammar schools in Hodonín district that includes 100 women and 43 men with an average age of 17,5 (SD = 1,01). MS did not influence the strength of the relationship between attachment and RWA and SDO which means that there was not found any connection between the anxiety and RWA; avoidance significantly increased SDO regardless of conditions. Unconfirmed impact of MS may be the result of a failed manipulation of independent variable, which consisted in random allocation of questions regarding about own death (priming MS) or about the toothache (control group). In this study participants answered questions about own death from philosophical and religious point of view which indicates that the feelings of danger and anxiety, which could lead towards the closer relationship between authoritarianism and attachment, did not appear.
