Empathy online: Expressing compassion in the YouTube comment section

Abstract:

V současné době zažíváme rozmach psané komunikace, a to díky rozvoji četných komunikačních platforem umožňujících online komunikaci, která představuje jakousi hybridní formu komunikace. I zde jsou aplikované určité komunikační strategie. Tato práce si klade za cíl zmapovat frekvenci soucitných komentářů a tendence využívání tzv. speech acts (mluvní akty) při vyjadřování soucitu v YouTube sekci komentářů. Bylo sesbíráno tři sta komentářů, které reagují na šest specifických videí nasdílených kanálem Soft White Underbelly, z nichž byly následně na základě určitých specifikací vyselektovány soucitné komentáře – jejich četnost výskytu byla spočítána a samotné komentáře pak byly podrobeny důkladné analýze přítomných mluvních aktů.

Abstract:

This age is experiencing a boom in written communication, especially thanks to the development of numerous communication platforms enabling online communication that represents a kind of hybrid communication. Even here, certain communicative strategies are applied. This MA thesis aims to map the frequency of occurrences of compassionate comments and the tendencies of expressing compassion in the YouTube comment section via performing speech acts. For the analysis, three hundred comments following the six videos posted by the YouTube channel Soft White Underbelly had been collected. From this sample, based on specific criteria, the compassionate comments have been selected and submitted for the computation of occurrence and the further analysis of utilized speech acts.
