The Montessori Method in the Teaching of English in a Czech Montessori School: A Case Study

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je prozkoumat, jakým způsobem je Montessori metoda uplatňována v praxi výuky anglického jazyka. Toto je zkoumáno v rámci dvou oblastí: možnosti, které se učiteli nabízí při řešení situací neukázněnosti žáků; možnosti, jak hodnotit práci žáků. V teoretické části je vyložena Montessori metoda. Přitom pozornost je věnována tomu, jak se v Montessori škole přistupuje ke svobodě volby a otázce kázně ve třídě. V neposlední řadě se teoretická část zabývá různými postupy hodnocení práce žáků, přičemž jde především o ty, které jsou v souladu s Montessori metodou. Empirická část je založena na jedno případové studii, jejímž předmětem je učitelka angličtiny ve vybrané české Montessori škole (Učitelka). Ke kódování a interpretaci dat autorka použila deduktivní varianty reflexivní tematické analýzy a výsledky podrobně sepsala do dvou výzkumných zpráv. Každá z těchto zpráv obsahuje tematickou tabulku s otevřenými kódy a tématy a shrnující pasáže. Sběr dat byl proveden pozorováním 21 vyučovacích hodin, přičemž některé probíhaly prezenčně a některé distanční formou, dále byl proveden rozhovor s učitelem. Aby byl zachován princip metodologické triangulace, autorka zahrnula také analýzu relevantních dokumentů. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že přístup Učitelky k nekázni je z velké části v souladu s Montessori metodou nebo tzv. metodou Pozitivní disciplíny. Zajímavým zjištěním je, že se učitelka v některých případech musela uchýlit k autoritativní intervenci, zejména když žák svým chováním omezoval svobodu jiného žáka. Hodnotící praxe Učitelky spočívá v dílčích hodnoceních různého typu, která jsou pak na konci každého pololetí zohledněna v závěrečném vysvědčení. Dílčí hodnocení nabývají těchto podob: sebehodnocení, hodnocení spolužáky; skryté hodnocení učitelem prostřednictvím pozorování; ústní hodnocení učitele; výsledky žákovských projektů. Navíc je žákům umožněno opakovaně pracovat na cvičení, dokud nedosáhnou uspokojivé úrovně zvládnutí dané oblasti. To je obecný model uplatňovaný v celkovém přístupu k výuce.

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis is to gain an insight into how the Montessori method is implemented in the practice of teaching English. Two areas are explored: options available for dealing with situations in which a lack of pupils’ discipline occurs; assessment of pupils’ work. The theoretical part provides an explanation of the fundamentals of the Montessori Method. Special attention is devoted to how freedom of choice and discipline in the class are approached in a Montessori environment. Last, but not least, the theoretical part also deals with a variety of practices of assessing pupils' work, highlighting those that are in accord with the method. The empirical part is based on a single case study where a Czech Montessori teacher of English is studied (the Teacher). The author used a deductive version of reflexive thematic analysis to conduct coding and interpretation and wrote up the results in a two-fold research report with attention to detail. Each report includes thematic tables presenting initial codes and themes and a summary of the analysis. In order to gather data, 21 lessons were observed, some being in an in-person format, some online, and one interview with the teacher was conducted. To maintain the principle of methodological triangulation, the author also collated an analysis of relevant official documents. The research shows that the Teacher’s approach to discipline is in a large part informed by the Montessori method or the so-called Positive discipline method. An interesting finding is that she had to resort to an authoritative intervention sometimes, especially when a pupil interfered with the freedom of another. The assessment practice adopted by the Teacher consists of sub-assessments which are then summarised in a final report at the end of each term. The sub-assessments consist of self-assessments, peer assessments, tacit observations and teacher assessments and the outcomes of the pupils’ projects. The pupils are allowed to repeatedly work on an exercise until they reach a satisfactory level of mastery in the area in question, which is a general model applied throughout the learning process.
