Data analytics view on international degree students

Abstract:

Nejen české vysoké školy si začínají uvědomovat význam datové analytiky pro strategické a informované rozhodování. Vedle celosvětového trendu, plyne zájem o tuto oblast ze strany českých vysokých škol také z institucionální akreditace a nutnosti měřit kvalitu vzdělávání, a onemocnění covid-19. Také Univerzity Karlova v poslední době hledala způsob, jak efektivně využít data z univerzitních systémů pro kvalifikované rozhodování, nastavení strategií i budoucího směřování univerzity. V minulosti na Univerzitě Karlově proběhla aktivita Sběr dat, jejímž hlavním cílem bylo zjistit, kde všude Univerzita Karlova ukládá data, a co by vedení univerzity chtělo sledovat. Výstupem však nebyly konkrétní reporty pro vedení univerzity. Tato práce si proto dala za cíl vytvořit prototyp dashboardu a reportů se zaměřením na cizojazyčné studijní programy. Tato oblast byla vybrána z důvodu připravované marketingové strategie pro nábor zahraničních studentů. Výstupy pokrývají posledních šest akademických let (2015/2016–2020/2021) a zaměřují se na tzv. degree studenty, tedy ty, co přijíždějí studovat na Univerzitu Karlovu s cílem získat titul a studium si hradí ze svých vlastních prostředků na aktuální trendy a sdílení příkladů dobré praxe náboru zahraničních studentů na zahraničních univerzitách. Jak dashboard/reporty, tak aktuální trendy náboru zahraničních studentů, pomůže vedení Univerzity Karlovy dělat strategická rozhodnutí, která jsou založená na datech, a lépe zacílit marketingové aktivity.

Abstract:

Not only Czech universities are beginning to realize the importance of data analytics for strategic and informed decision-making. On one hand, it is a global trend but on the other hand the continuous interest of Czech universities in this area also comes from the institutional accreditation where the quality of education is being measured. Covid-19 also plays a role. The Charles University has recently been looking into ways how to effectively use data from university systems for informed decision-making, strategy setting and the future direction of the university. The activity Sběr dat took place at Charles University whose main aim was a complex screening of the university environment regarding where data is stored and what the university management wants to monitor. However, the activity did not count with a specific report or dashboard for the university management. This paper therefore aimed to create a prototype dashboard and reports focusing on students, studying in foreign study programs. This area was chosen due to the marketing strategy on the recruitment of foreign students which is currently being prepared. The output reports cover the last six academic years (2015/2016–2020/2021) and focus on the so-called degree students, ie those who come to study at Charles University in order to obtain a degree and pay for their studies from their own resources. Moreover, this paper presents current trends and best practices in student recruiting. Both the dashboard/reports and the current recruiting trends will help the management of Charles University to make strategic decisions based on data and to better aim their marketing activities towards international students.
