Interspecific variability in bone microstructure with respect to the use of domestic pig bones as a flat bone proxy for ballistic testing

Abstract:

Kost je dynamickou trojrozměrnou mikrostrukturou, jejíž rozložení a vlastnosti ovlivňují chování kosti při balistickém nárazu. Znalost tohoto chování má zásadní význam pro forenzní vědu, jelikož poskytuje užitečné informace při rekonstrukci střelby, jako je typ zbraně, střely a úhel. Zatímco donedávna bylo množné mikrostrukturu kostní tkáně zkoumat pouze ve 2D projekci, v současné době je možné propojením 2D histologických a 3D zobrazovacích metod získat detailní přehled o mikrostruktuře kostní tkáně. Tato práce je koncipována jako pilotní studie zkoumající variabilitu mikrostruktury do této chvíle nepříliš detailně studovaných lidských a prasečích plochých kostí pomocí zmíněných 2D a 3D zobrazovacích metod. Prasečí kosti byly vybrány kvůli jejich častému využití ve forenzním kontextu díky své anatomické a morfologické podobnosti k člověku. Materiál tvoří celkem 12 vzorků kostní tkáně z lidské a prasečí lebky, lopatky a pánve. Kosti byly naskenovány pomocí mikro-výpočetní tomografie a následně z nich byly vytvořeny histologické výbrusy. Jednotlivé výstupy byly morfologicky a metricky porovnávaný. Výsledkem práce je podrobný popis mikrostruktury plochých kostí.

Abstract:

The bone has a dynamic three dimensional microstructure whose distribution and properties influence its behavior during ballistic impact. Understanding of this behavior is of fundamental importance to forensic science as it provides useful information in reconstructing gunshot trauma such as weapon type, projectile type, and angle. While until recently it was that the microstructure of bone tissue could only be examined in 2D projection, nowadays by combining2D histological and 3D imaging methods it is possible to obtain a detailed view of the microstructure of bone tissue. This thesis is designed as a pilot study investigating the variability of microstructure in human and pig flat bones, which have not been studied in detail to date, using the aforementioned 2D and 3D imaging methods. Pig bones were chosen because of their frequent use in forensic contexts due to their anatomical and morphological similarity to those of humans. The material consists of a total of 12 bone tissue samples from human and pig skull, scapula, and pelvis. The bones were scanned using micro-computed tomography and subsequently used to make histological thin sections. Individual outcomes were morphologically and metrically compared. This thesis resulted in a detailed description of the microstructure of the flat bones.
