Czech candidates for MEP 2004 - 2019

Abstract:

Zastoupení České republiky v Evropském parlamentu, zákonodárném orgánu Evropské unie, umožňuje nejen poslancům, ale zprostředkovaně i českému lidu podílet se na politice mezinárodního měřítka. I přesto můžeme pozorovat velmi laxní postoj české společnosti k volbám do této instituce. Účast na nich zřejmě není tolik významná jako rozhodování o domácí politice. Tato skutečnost může být dána charakterem evropských voleb, jež lze označit za volby tzv. druhého řádu. Druhořadost kompletně ovlivňuje výběrové procesy kandidátů na europoslance ve všech úrovních. Dalším rozhodujícím faktorem, který určuje zastoupení české společnosti v Europarlamentu je proces personalizace politiky, a tedy vliv individuálních charakteristik politika na volbu elektorátu. Cílem práce je zhodnotit, jakým způsobem jsou čeští kandidáti vybíráni na kandidátní listiny voleb do Evropského parlamentu a jaké atributy napomáhají k jejich úspěšnému zvolení vzhledem k specifické aréně, v níž se odehrávají.

Abstract:

Representation in the European Parliament, the legislative body of the European Union, allows MEPs and, as a result, Czech citizens to participate in the international politics. However, Czech people have displayed a consistently indifferent attitude toward European Parliamentary elections. Voting for members of the European Parliament, a process known as Second-Order elections, is generally considered to be of a far lesser importance than domestic elections. This inferior standing influences the selection processes of candidates for MEPs on all levels. Another decisive factor that influences the representation of Czech society in the European Parliament is the process of personalizing politics. This results in an electorate that is more focused on the personalities of the candidates over their qualifications. The aim of this thesis is to determine how Czech candidates are selected for the European Parliamentary elections, taking into account what attributes help them succeed, and the specific arena in which they take place.
