Spells as an anxiety decreasing tool: Relationship between popularity of books of spells and ritualized behavior

Abstract:

Již Bronislaw Malinowski ukázal, že nejistota a z ní plynoucí úzkost stojí za emergen-cí magického myšlení. Behaviorálním projevem tohoto myšlení je pak ritualizace, která zmíněnou prvotní úzkost snižuje. Tato práce se zabývala analýzou rituálů šesti vybraných knih kouzel. Jejich anxiolytický potenciál byl operacionalizován jako oblí-benost na čtenářském trhu. Rozbor 25 náhodných kouzel z každé knihy ukázal na vztah mezi množstvím ritualizace, vč. intenzity jednotlivých prvků a oblíbeností knih, a to podle očekávaného trendu, tj. ritualizace rostla s větší oblíbeností. Žádný takový vztah naopak nebyl prokázán u přítomnosti specifických substancí, které mají vliv na vnímání efektivnosti rituálů či zastoupení oblastí působení kouzel, ani ve vztahu k míře úzkosti jimi působené. Toto zjištění posiluje význam ritualizace, a poukazuje na možnosti testování i takovýchto rituálů v praxi.

Abstract:

Bronislaw Malinowski has already shown that uncertainty and subsequent anxiety are forces behind the emergence of magical thinking. The behavioral manifestation of this thinking is ritualization, which reduces the initial anxiety. This work analyzed rituals extracted from six selected books of spells. Their anxiolytic potential was operationalized as their popularity in the reading market. The analysis of 25 random spells from each book showed the relationship between the popularity of books and the amount of ritualization (incl. its elements). According to the expected trend, ritualization grew with higher popularity. On the contrary, no such relationship has been found with the presence of specific substances (affecting the perception of the effectiveness of rituals) or spells’ areas of action, not even concerning the anxiety caused by them. These findings demonstrate the importance of ritualization and the possibilities of testing such rituals in practice.
