The credibility of online information from the perspective of women suffering with eating disorders

Abstract:

Tato kvalitativní studie je zaměřena na hodnocení kredibility online informací z perspektivy mladých žen, které trpí poruchami příjmu potravy. Cílem studie je zjistit jaké charakteristiky těchto mladých žen vstupují do procesu hodnocení kredibility online informací a jaké známky kredibility tyto ženy v tomto procesu používají. Třicet individuálních polo-strukturovaných rozhovorů s mladými ženami ve věku 16 až 28 let trpícími poruchami příjmu potravy bylo analyzováno pomocí metody tematické analýzy dat. Byla analyzována data z výzkumného projektu THINLINE. V rámci analýzy bylo identifikováno pět témat: Vystavení informacím, Schopnosti a zdroje, Motivace, Osobnostní nastavení a Zkušenost s tématem. Specifika fází poruch příjmu potravy jsou popsány v rámci všech vynořených témat. Známky kredibility webových stránek a charakteristiky ostatních online uživatelů používané v procesu hodnocení kredibility online informací vyvstaly v tématech Obsahové známky kredibility, Charakteristiky dalších uživatelů a Známky kredibility webových stránek. Zjištění a praktické důsledky studie jsou diskutovány v kontextu předchozích výzkumů a teoretického rámce.

Abstract:

This qualitative study is focused on the evaluation of the credibility of online information from the perspective of young women who suffer with eating disorders. The aim is to identify the characteristics of these young women that are involved in the process and the significant credibility cues. Thematic analysis was used to analyse 30 individual semi-structured interviews with young women aged 16-28 who suffer with eating disorders. The data are part of the THINLINE research project. Five themes were identified: Exposure to Information, Abilities and Resources, Motivation, Personal Mindset, and Experience with the Topic. The specifics of eating-disorder phases are described within all of the themes. The credibility cues of websites and the characteristics of other users are both also part of the credibility evaluation and emerged within the themes of Con-tent Credibility Cues, Characteristics of Other Users, and Website Credibility Cues. The findings and practical implications of the study are discussed in the context of previous research and a theoretical framework.
