Scotland and Its Independence Tendencies: Today and Throughout History

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje skotské snaze o dosažení nezávislosti, a to v průběhu historie i v dnešní době. Téma je aktuální zejména z toho důvodu, že v listopadu roku 2010 proběhne ve Skotsku referendum, v němž se Skoti budou moci vyjádřit k předkládanému návrhu zákonu, jehož cílem je rozšířit pravomoci Skotského parlamentu. Podle jedné z navrhovaných variant by parlament mohl mít dokonce i pravomoc rozhodnout o osamostatnění Skotska. Důležitou součástí diplomové práce jsou historické, národnostní, kulturní a politické aspekty boje za nezávislost. Cílem práce je vyhodnotit, zda se Skotsko může výhledově osamostatnit či nikoli.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with Scottish independence tendencies today and in the past. The issue is topical particularly because a referendum on a proposed bill which aims at extending the powers for the Scottish Parliament is going to be held in November 2010. According to one of the proposed versions of the referendum bill, the Parliament might even be entitled to vote over Scottish independence. The thesis includes historical, national identity, cultural and political aspects of the fight for independence. The aim of the thesis is to answer the question whether Scotland is likely to become independent in the future or not.
