Headlines in British Online Tabloids: Syntactic and Lexical Analysis

Abstract:

Práce je analýzou online novinových titulků dvou britských bulvárních novin, The Sun a The Daily Mirror, z hlediska vybraných syntaktických a lexikálních charakteristik, se záměrem poukázat na jejich podobnosti a rozdíly. Teoretická část práce poskytuje obecný úvod do historie a pravděpodobné budoucnosti novin, vymezení pojmu 'zpráva' v novinovém kontextu a formátu novinového článku, kde je největší pozornost věnována právě novinovým titulkům, jejich funkci a vybraným syntaktickým a lexikálním charakteristikám. Praktická část se zabývá analýzou titulků vztahujících se k některému ze členů britské královské rodiny. Závěr práce poukazuje na lexikální a syntaktické rozdíly a podobnosti titulků a zdůrazňuje jako největší rozdíl dvousložkovou strukturu titulků v The Sun.

Abstract:

The thesis is the analysis of online newspaper headlines of two British tabloids, The Sun and The Daily Mirror from the viewpoint of their syntactic and lexical characteristics, with the intent to point to their similarities and differences. The theoretical part of the thesis provides the general introduction to the history and the presumable future of newspapers, the definition of the term 'news' in the context of newspapers and the structure of the newspaper article with the main focus on the headlines, their functions and chosen syntactic and lexical characteristics. The practical part analyses the headlines related to the members of the British royal family. The conclusion points to the lexical and syntactical differences and similarities and accentuate the two-part headline structure of The Sun as the most distinctive.
