Bankovka predstavuje platobný prostriedok, emitovaný centrálnou bankou. Bankovky a mince tvoria základné nástroje hotovostného peňažného obehu. Peniaze vystupujú ako dôležitý provk v reprodukcii spoločenského kapitálu, vo výrobe a výmene, v prelievaní kapitálu, migrácii pracovných síl a v ďalších procesoch.
