X-ray diffraction analysis of oxide layers

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se nejprve věnujeme rentgenové strukturní analýze tenkých vrstev LaFeO3 deponovaných na substrát SrTiO3 a multivrstev SrTiO3/LaFeO3 nanesených na tentýž substrát. Studované vzorky jsou vyrobeny na výzkumném pracovišti CEITEC Nano v Brně a na Univerzity of Twente v Nizozemí. Využité strukturní experimentální metody jsou rentgenová odrazivost, mapování reciprokého prostoru a koplanární symetrická difrakce. Numerickým proložením reflexní křivky jsou určeny zejména tloušťky tenkých vrstev a multivrstev. Z map reciprokého prostoru lze dopočítat především stupeň relaxace daných vrstev a koplanární symetrická difrakce poskytuje informaci o vertikálních mřížových parametrech konstituentů multivrstev SrTiO3/LaFeO3. Ty jsou získány porovnáním naměřených difraktogramů se simulací v rámci kinematické teorie rozptylu na multivrstvách. Další část práce se zabývá analýzou optických konstant těchto vzorků, které jsou zkoumány pomocí spektroskopické elipsometrie. Hlavním cílem je získání absorpční části dielektrické funkce odpovídající mezipásovým přechodům v daném vzorku. Rentgenová strukturní analýza mimo jiné dokládá, že téměř všechny měřené vzorky jsou pseudomorfní. Srovnání optických spekter kvalitních multivrstev ukazuje, že zde nedochází k silné elektronové rekonstrukci a že elektronový stav konstituenčních materiálů zůstává v zásadě stabilní až do jedné monovrstvy. S klesající tloušťkou vrstvy je pozorován posun maxima absorpce okolo 4,8 eV na vyšší energie, který je způsoben buďto kvantovým uvězněním stavů Ti nebo rostoucím vlivem La.

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis we first dealed with X-ray structural analysis of thin layers of LaFeO3 deposited on a SrTiO3 substrate and multilayers of SrTiO3/LaFeO3 deposited on the same substrate. The studied samples are produced at the CEITEC Nano research institute in Brno and at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. The used structural experimental methods involve X-ray reflectivity, reciprocal space mapping and coplanar symmetric diffraction. The thicknesses of thin layers and multilayers where determined by numerical fitting of the reflection curve. Degree of relaxation of the given layers were determined from the maps of the reciprocal space and the coplanar symmetric diffraction provided information about the out-of-plane lattice parameters of the constituents of multilayers SrTiO3/LaFeO3. These were obtained by comparing the measured diffractograms with the simulation within the kinematic theory of scattering on multilayers. The next part of the work deals with the analysis of optical constants of these samples, which were determined by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The main goal was to obtain the absorptive part of the dielectric function, which corresponds to the interband transitions in a given sample. X-ray structural analysis showed, among other things, that almost all measured samples are pseudomorphic. Comparison of the optical absorption spectra of high-quality multilayers showed that there is no strong electronic reconstruction due to the interfaces and that the electronic state of the constituent materials remained stable down to one monolayer. A shift of the absorption maximum at 4.8 eV to higher energies was observed with decreasing layer thickness, which can be caused either by the quantum confinement of Ti states or by the increasing influence of La.
