Mediation of internet use and its relationship with parenting styles and charactristics among parents of primary school children

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá tím, jak rodičovská mediace užívání internetu souvisí s charakteristikami a výchovnými styly rodičů dětí mladšího školního věku. Dále zkoumá, která mediační strategie je podle rodičů nejefektivnější. Cílem práce bylo ověřit, zda mediují užívání internetu více matky, mladší, vzdělanější rodiče a rodiče, kteří sami sebe vnímají jako kompetentní pro práci s tímto médiem. Dalšími cíli bylo zjistit, zda vyšší míra restriktivní mediace a monitorování pozitivně souvisí s autoritativním a autoritářským výchovným stylem a zda nejvíce mediují autoritativní a nejméně nedbalí rodiče. Práce rovněž zkoumala, zda rodiče považují za nejefektivnější aktivní mediaci internetu. Data byla získána prostřednictvím online dotazníku vyvěšeného na 13 diskusních fórech. Dotazník se skládal z otázek zjišťujících charakteristiky rodičů a postoj k efektivitě mediačních strategií, z dotazníku pěti typů mediačních strategií (Hasebrink et al., 2011) a revidované, zkrácené verze Dotazníku pro zjišťování způsobu výchovy v rodině (Čáp & Boschek, 1994; upravil Širůček, 2008). Zkoumaný soubor tvořilo 118 žen. Kvůli nekonzistentnosti škál nemohly být vztahy zkoumány tak komplexně, jak bylo zamýšleno. Bylo zjištěno, že míra aktivní mediace internetové bezpečnosti, restriktivní mediace a monitorování negativně souvisí s autonomií, kterou rodič dítěti poskytuje. Mezi aktivní mediací internetové bezpečnosti a vypadlými položkami z původní škály emoční vřelostí byl nalezen kladný vztah. Navzdory očekávání byla zjištěna pozitivní souvislost mezi aktivní mediací internetové bezpečnosti a věkem rodičů a negativní vztah mezi monitorováním a dosaženým vzděláním rodičů. Téměř 95 % matek se považovalo za kompetentnější pro práci s internetem než jejich dítě. Výsledky podpořily tvrzení, že rodiče považují za nejefektivnější strategie aktivní mediace, a to jak aktivní mediaci užívání internetu, tak bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

The study deals with parental mediation of internet use in connection with characteristics and parenting styles in primary school children. Furthermore, it considers which mediation strategy is the most effective according to parents. The aim of this work was to check up whether mothers, younger and well-educated parents and the parents who perceive themselves as qualified person for internet work mediates the internet use more. The next aims were to find out if higher degree of restrictive mediation and monitoring have positive connection with authoritative and authoritarian parenting style and if authoritative parents mediate internet the most and neglecting parents mediate the least. The work also researched if parents consider the active mediation as the most effective. Data was gained through online questionnaire which was put up on 13 discussion forum. The questionnaire was composed of the questions which find out parent characteristics and their attitude to efficiency of mediation strategy, five-types mediation strategy questionnaire (Hasebrink et. al., 2011) and audited shortened version of parental styles questionnaire (Čáp & Boschek, 1994, rearranged by Širůček, 2008). The research group consists of 118 women. The relation could not be investigate as complexly as it was intended because of scale incinsistency. It was found out that the degree of active mediation of internet safety, restrictive mediation and monitoring negatively relate to autonomy that parents afford to their children. There was noticed positive relationship between active mediation of internet safety and cancelled items of original warmth scale. Despite of awaiting positive relation between active mediation of internet safety and parent age and negative relation between monitoring and achieved parent education were found. Almost 95 % of mothers considered themselves to be more competent for internet work than their children. The results supported assertion that parents consider both active mediation of internet use and active mediation of internet safety as the most effective.
