Financial literacy among UJEP students

Abstract:

Práce přispívá k existující literatuře o finanční gramotnosti, která upozorňuje na nedostatečnou úroveň finanční gramotnosti lidí, včetně vysokoškolských studentů. Za pomoci 489 odpovědí z dotazníkového šetření zkoumá finanční gramotnost vysokoškolských studentů UJEP v Ústí nad Labem. Konkrétně se zaměřuje na finanční chování a úroveň finančních vědomostí ve čtyřech oblastech: 1) obecné vědomosti, 2) spoření a půjčky, 3) pojištění a 4) investování. Prostřednictvím analýzy ANOVA a následné logistické regrese vyhodnocuje rozdílnou úroveň finančních vědomostí podle charakteristiky jednotlivého studenta. Chí-kvadrát test sleduje vliv úrovně finančních vědomostí na názory a rozhodnutí. Následně se snaží rozdělit a popsat za pomocí lineární regrese z jakých zdrojů studenti čerpají vědomosti. Zdroje jsou rozděleny do třech částí: 1) rodina a prostředí, 2) formální vzdělání, a 3) vědomosti nabyté zkušeností. Výsledky naznačují nedostatečnou úroveň finančních vědomostní, jelikož studenti dokázali zodpovědět pouze 58 % otázek správně. Pohlaví a zkušenost na finančním trhu se ukázaly jako nejvýznamnější faktory ovlivňující úroveň finančních vědomostí. Nízká úroveň znalostí omezí jejich schopnost činit informovaná finanční rozhodnutí.

Abstract:

The paper contributes to the existing literature on financial literacy, which highlights the lack of financial literacy among people, including university students. Using 489 responses from a questionnaire survey, it examines the financial literacy of university students at UJEP in Ústí nad Labem. Specifically, it focuses on financial behaviour and the level of financial knowledge in four areas: 1) general knowledge, 2) savings and loans, 3) insurance and 4) investing. Through ANOVA analysis and subsequent logistic regression, it evaluates the different levels of financial knowledge according to the characteristics of the individual student. Chi-square test examines the effect of financial knowledge level on opinions and decisions. It then attempts to disaggregate and describe using linear regression what sources students draw knowledge from. The sources are divided into three parts: 1) family and background, 2) formal education, and 3) knowledge gained through experience. The results indicate a lack of financial knowledge, as students were only able to answer 58 % of the questions correctly. Gender and financial market experience emerged as the most significant factors affecting the level of financial knowledge. Low levels of knowledge will limit their ability to make informed financial decisions.
