Communication, adult attachment and social support among Czech police and customs officers

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je prozkoumat české pracovní prostředí policistů a celníků, s důrazem na sociální oporu na pracovišti, citovou vazbu vůči spolupracovníkům a způsoby komunikace mezi nimi. Dalším cílem práce je průzkum možných souvislostí mezi těmito proměnnými a každodenním pracovním prostředím, tedy bližší popis pracovního prostředí ve smyslu vztahů mezi spolupracovníky. Dotazníkového šetření se zúčastnilo 137 respondentů z různých pracovišť městské policie, celní správy a policie ČR. Z výsledků analýz vyplývá, že stav, kdy má pracovník přiděleného stálého pracovního partnera, neovlivňuje míru sdílení pozitivních i negativních zážitků během směny na pracovišti. Dále bylo zjištěno, že tendence k vyhýbavé citové vazbě vůči svým spolupracovníkům nesouvisí s vnímanou mírou nezdvořilosti na pracovišti, jež je negativně ovlivňována tendencí k úzkostnosti. Posledním zjištěním, které tato práce přináší, je fakt, že jistá citová vazba nesouvisí s tendencí komunikovat s okolím na stejné úrovni, jako rovný s rovným, ale vytváří předpoklad, že ostatní tak se mnou budou komunikovat. Závěrem této práce jsou diskutovány limity výzkumu, implikace výzkumu pro praxi a možná vysvětlení vztahů mezi fenomény skrze dosavadní odbornou literaturu.

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to study the working environment of Czech police and customs officers, with an emphasis on social support in the workplace, adult attachment between employees and ways of communication between them. Another aim is to explore other possible connections between these variables and the everyday working environment, i.e. to provide an insight into work environment in terms of relations among the co-workers. 137 respondents from different departments of metropolitan police, board of customs and police of the Czech Republic participated in a questionnaire-based research. The analyses showed that the degree of sharing positive and negative experiences during a work shift was not affected by whether the worker has a permanent working partner. Furthermore, it was found that the tendency towards an avoidant emotional attachment to one’s colleagues was not linked to the perceived level of incivility in the workplace, but the level of incivility was negatively correlated with the tendency towards anxiety. Last important finding was that while a secure attachment style was not linked to the tendency to communicate with others on the same level, i.e. as with equals, this type of attachment was linked to expecting such “same-level” communication from others. Finally, limitations of the present study, as well as its practical implications are discussed, and, in the context of existing literature, explanations for found relationships are suggested.
