Achievement motivation and stress in students of general medicine

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá výkonovou motivací, strategiemi zvládání stresu a zjištěním jejich vzájemných vazeb u 103 studentů všeobecného lékařství ve věkovém rozmezí 20 - 32 let. Srovnávali jsme výkonovou motivaci a strategie zvládání stresu mezi muži a ženami i mezi třetím a šestým ročníkem. Výzkum byl koncipován kvantitativně. Data byla získána prostřednictvím dotazníku motivace k výkonu LMI a dotazníku strategie zvládání stresu SVF 78. Výsledky ukázaly, že u našeho výzkumného souboru neexistují statisticky významné mezipohlavní rozdíly motivace k výkonu. Mezi 3. a 6. ročníkem nebyl zjištěn rozdíl v celkovém skóre motivace k výkonu, ale 6. ročník dosáhl vyššího skóre v dimenzi internalita. Náš výzkumný soubor nejčastěji používá strategie kontroly, které zahrnují konstruktivní snahy po zvládání, kontrole a kompetenci. Třeťáci oproti šestákům častěji používají strategie odklonu a kontroly. Ženy v našem výzkumném souboru užívají strategie odklonu častěji než muži. Muži v našem souboru naopak používají častěji strategii podhodnocení. Síla výkonové motivace u našeho vybraného souboru studentů všeobecného lékařství kladně souvisí s pozitivními strategiemi stresu.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with achievement motivation, stress coping strategies, and finding how these are interconnected in the group of 103 medical students between 20-32 years of age. We compared achievement motivation and stress coping strategies between male and female groups, as well as between third and sixth year students. The research was conducted quantitatively. The data were obtained through the Achievement Motivation Questionnaire LMI and the Stress Management Strategies Questionnaire SVF 78. The results indicate that there are no statistically significant intergender differences in achievement motivation within the sample. No difference was found between third and sixth year students overall scores in achievement motivation; however, the sixth year students achieved a higher score in the dimension of internality. The most commonly used stress coping strategies used in the tested sample are those that include a constructive effort to cope, stay in control, and be competent. Third year students use strategies involving diversion and control more often than sixth year students. The women in our sample use diversion strategies more often than men. Men, then, use the underestimation strategy more frequently. The magnitude of achievement motivation in our sample of medical students correlates positively with the presence of positive stress coping strategies.
